Overview

Carried by Irish gentlemen for centuries, the shillelagh walking stick was often a symbol of a young man’s transition into adulthood. Since the mid-19th century, it has come to represent Irish craftsmanship and hospitality. The artisan who carves these blackthorn- and hazel-wood walking sticks in his County Cork home collects the branches on his daily walks through West Cork forests. Finished with a rubber tip for traction. Each is unique.

These sticks are all unique, of course. The handle on mine is huge and I considered returning it, but then tried it out and it's fine. It's kind of like walking around with the head of a three-wood in my hand, but no wild beast will dare apporach if I wave this mighty club about. You should know that the carving of the handle is crude, as if done with an ax. The finish appears to be very durable. The shaft is as interesting as a dark-stained broom handle, which I suppose is necessary due to the pieces of wood used. (I have an English stick that has bark and is more refined in shape.) Solid, very usable walking stick.

Unfortunately the IRISH WALKING STICK sent to me did not look remotely like the article pictured in the catalog. The article shown in the catalog was finished well and "looked" professional. The article sent to me was rough and amateurish. National Geographic not only misrepresented the walking stick in but made me spend my time and additional money to return it. I cancelled the catalog.

Very poor workmanship and poor quality 2 piece unfortuniate

About Me Authentic And Reaal, Practical

Verified Reviewer

Pros

  • It Came On Time
  • Nice Tip On Bottom

Cons

  • Bulky
  • Fat Handle
  • Glued Together
  • Heavy
  • Poor Construction
  • Poor Wood Filler Use
  • Too Tall

Best Uses

  • Aid In Walking Not
  • Not Much

Comments about Irish Walking Stick:

The stick had high hopes but it was poorly made in two parts, lacked a comfortable handle and was filled with sandy wood filler. The finish was sticky? I expected one piece construction with the chance to cut it to the right height. The photo in the catalog was much better than what was received. Way below the high standard for The National Geographic.

Pros

  • Highwayman Deterrent
  • Light With A Unique Look

Cons

  • Hand Piece Too Lumpy

Best Uses

  • Light Travels

Comments about Irish Walking Stick:

Though the handpiece being a natural feature of the shillelagh is, well natural, this particular one was too full through the grip, making holding it too unnatural.

      Nice looking walking stick!!

      Comments about Irish Walking Stick:

The walking stick is very good looking, however was hoping that it had more of a 'blackthorn' look. Will use the walking stick as an aide after knee surgery so it will get good use.

The only thing I don't like about it is that I can't find the rubber end grips that fit it.
The grip fits perfectly in my hand!

            Comments about Irish Walking Stick:

I injured both knees years ago, and from time to time they "go out" and I need a bit of extra support. Knowing that I love all things Irish, a friend had this sent to me. I love how light yet sturdy it is; and the fact that it does NOT have a ferrule made it easy to cut down to my size. I like that it is so long, for those who are taller.
