Overview

DNA discovery powered by National Geographic and Helix.

National Geographic has been charting the unknown for over a century. And, we’re exploring the next great frontier—your DNA story—through a new partnership. After you place your order for Geno 2.0, you’ll receive a DNA collection kit from Helix and you will have to create an online account with National Geographic and Helix. Once you’ve been sequenced, you can access your DNA insights through Helix and National Geographic for years to come. Helix is more than DNA sequencing—it’s your destination for DNA discovery.

Our revolutionary Geno 2.0 Next Generation test with Helix has been enhanced to offer the most up to date ancestry available and now has the following features improved over the original Geno 2.0:

  • • Improved ancestral results using Next Generation Sequencing
  • • More accurate regional ancestry—based on more than double the number of regions and 60 reference populations
  • • Improved maternal and paternal haplogroup calls, and 20 new ancestral stories
  • • NEW: Historical Genius Matches
  • • Access to join Helix’s ecosystem of DNA apps
  • • We tell your migration story of 500 years and past (not 500 years to present).

Geno 2.0 Next Gen with Helix now includes Historical Genius Matches through the analysis of your mitochondrial or Y-chromosome DNA. We will be using DNA haplogroups to tell you which famous 'geniuses' you could be related to. We are defining genius as masters of skill and or industry and intelligence. This is now part of the kit for all Helix users and not an extra purchase!

Introducing the next generation of our Genographic Project Participation Kit. This new DNA test—brought to you by National Geographic in cooperation with Helix—uses cutting-edge technology to give you the richest ancestry information available. We tell the story of 500 years and past. National Geographic designed Geno Next Gen based on the new technologies and insights that emerged since the launch of the Genographic Project more than ten years ago.

Join the more 800,000 people who have already taken part in National Geographic's groundbreaking Genographic Project—contribute to this real-time scientific effort and learn more about yourself than you ever thought possible.

By participating, you will:

  • • Discover the migration paths your ancient ancestors followed hundreds—even thousands—of years ago, with an unprecedented view of your ancestral journey
  • • Learn what percentage of your genome is affiliated with specific regions of the world
  • • Find out if you have Neanderthal ancestry

How is this test different from others I see advertised?

  • • Your purchase supports National Geographic Society’s nonprofit work in conservation, exploration, research, and education. The Society receives funds from National Geographic Partners, LLC, funded in part by your purchase. To learn more, visit www.natgeo.com/info.
  • • The Genographic Project results are based on discoveries made since the launch of the project, and the results continue to grow as more people join Genographic, and as our scientists make new discoveries
  • • Our regional ancestry results compare your unique DNA pattern to that of 60 reference populations across the world
  • • Working in 140 countries and with more than 80,000 indigenous participants, Genographic Project scientists created the most diverse results database and genetic resource of any in the world

What's included in the Geno 2.0 Next Generation Helix Genographic DNA Ancestry Test kit

The Geno 2.0 Next Generation kit contains everything you need to begin the journey into your past, including a saliva collection kit and instructions for submitting your DNA samples. You must have Internet access to view the results—results will not be mailed. Results are available online 6-12 weeks after our lab receives your DNA samples. Each kit contains supplies for testing one person.

You must send your kit back within 12 months of purchase. Helix will conduct the DNA analysis and will maintain your results. Please note, because women do not carry a Y chromosome, this test will not reveal direct paternal deep ancestry for female participants. Women will learn other information about their paternal side of the family, such as regional percentages, Mitochondrial and Neanderthal percentages.

How your participation helps the Genographic Project:

The Genographic Project is an ambitious attempt to help answer fundamental questions about where humankind originated and how we came to populate the Earth. Using the latest genetic and computational technologies to analyze historical patterns in DNA from participants around the world we seek to reveal our migratory history and to better understand the connections and differences that make up humankind.

As a Genographic Project participant, you will have the opportunity to contribute your data to our Genographic database, helping our scientists and researchers who are working to chart a comprehensive map of the early stages of human history. Participation in the Genographic Project database is your choice and is not necessary to access your individual results.

Please read the complete terms and conditions of purchase. If you are an educator, looking to purchase kits for your classroom, or home schooling, please contact 713-868-1807.

Who is Helix:

Learn what your DNA says about you. It all starts with Helix. Helix empowers everyone to explore what makes them unique—their DNA. The Helix world-class laboratory uses the most advanced technology to read your DNA, all from one saliva sample (amazing, right?). We assemble, store, and protect your genetic information so you can learn about your deep ancestry through Geno 2.0 Next Generation. Learn more about Helix.

Instructions

Once you have completed the US saliva collection process, you will secure the tube inside the transport bag and mail the tubes and form off to the lab using the supplied US pre-paid postage yellow box. It can take the lab several weeks to process and analyze your DNA. In the meantime, you can visit the Genographic web site to see where your sample is in the analysis process.

You must read and accept the terms and conditions to participate in the Genographic Project. By selecting "I Accept" and clicking the "Add to Cart" button, you have indicated your acceptance of the terms and conditions to participate.

This is an amazing product! I'm Puerto Rican on my mom's side of the family, and I've always wondered how much of my ancestry comes from the Americas and Africa. But even though I was most curious about my regional ancestry results, I actually found myself most intrigued by the maternal/paternal line results it gave me. Strange as it sounds, clicking through the paths that my ancient ancestors took out of Africa and across the world made me feel a connection to them across time. (And, it turns out, my maternal line is a pretty rare Taíno one! So I also get to enjoy being pretty unique.)

The only downside I've noticed with the product is that the results don't show up as well on mobile (specifically iOS). It's not a huge downside, but it made it hard to show people on my iPad.

I was so excited to finally take a DNA test and figured Nat Geo would be the obvious go-to, especially since every participant adds to a huge global research project. The results were pretty disappointing however; I knew going in that have primarily Scandinavian and Irish roots, but was interested in finding out how the percentages would break out. The results came back "Northwestern Europe", which encompasses both places, so no help there. Also, buyers of this Next Gen kit that they're selling in the US do not have the ability to obtain the raw data for further analysis and ancestry investigations that every other DNA test provider offers, which is very disappointing. I wish I'd done a little more research into the product rather than blindly trusting the National Geographic name.

Poor maps, vague information, website not updated for Helix

Comments about Geno 2.0 Next Generation Genographic Helix DNA Ancestry Kit, U.S. Delivery:

Good luck finding out more about the different possible ancestral regions. Their website has also not been updated for the Helix branded test, so any info you do find elsewhere on the site will not be relevant to you. The map is also formatted horribly! When you zoom in on the map, the shaded circles stay the same size as the map gets bigger. Also, when you click on each shaded circle, it shows a much larger area that the ancestral regions actually covers. For example: the Northwestern Europe shaded circle appears to cover only Scotland on the map. Click on the shaded circle and you will see (on a small pop-up picture that you have to squint to examine) that this region actually includes the entire UK, Ireland, Scandinavia, France, Germany, and Iceland!

Wonderful Test (if you've done your research)

Pros

  • Deep Ancestry- From Dawn of Humanity
  • Human Migration Routes- From Your Specific Line

Cons

  • Women don't get Y Chromosome info- obviously

Best Uses

Comments about Geno 2.0 Next Generation Genographic Helix DNA Ancestry Kit, U.S. Delivery:

For starters, I loved my test. I knew going in to this that women get half the results, because we don't have Y Chromosomes. I also knew that this test wasn't like the others advertised elsewhere, and I chose National Geographic's for that reason. I didn't need to learn if I was 45.234% Irish or whatever (because I find that in-authentic to the fact that people from one country are not automatically all the same genetically because they live in the same country), I wanted to learn what regions I came from, my hominid ancestry, and the migration patterns of early humans most related to me. I found out lots of informative and specific data, such as my hominid makeup (I'm basically a cavegirl), and not all of it was what I expected (even though my family keeps a lot of records. There's a difference between ancestry as we know it, like family trees, and the ancestry of every man or woman who has lead up to you. National Geographic tests for mankind. I found it fascinating, but I'm also extra interested in DNA.

Comments about Geno 2.0 Next Generation Genographic Helix DNA Ancestry Kit, U.S. Delivery:

I liked this idea because you're supporting research. But it is misleading in that the current Geno 2.0 Helix IS NOT Geno 2.0 and therefore you do not have access to raw DNA, nor is this kit compatible with Family Tree DNA as is suggested on their website. NONE of these kits are processed at Family Tree. Information provided is extremely limited and I want more in depth results which can only be obtained with raw data and transferred to other sites. Misleading advertising, no RAW DNA, can't load to FTDNA, and there is SO much information that should be available but isn't. I really, really wanted to love this product and the results but I just can't. Maybe if results were more detailed (provide the option to see more in depth info) and if RAW data was accessible I would like it more.

Why don't they tell you upfront that if you are female you will only get your mother's side of your ancestry, but if you are male, you will get both? Why do they charge the same for males and females? It should be half price for women! I now have to ask a close male relative to take this and pay full price in order to get my whole history.

Comments about Geno 2.0 Next Generation Genographic Helix DNA Ancestry Kit, U.S. Delivery:

Great look into autosomal and direct male/female line ancestry. Ethnicity estimate from thousands of years ago, not hundreds. For example, I am pretty much fully NW European on paper, but I get 30 something % Eastern European, 22% Southern European, and 3% Asia Minor.

      Pros

      Cons

      • Customer service is nonexistent
      • Expensive
      • Haplogroup info is conflicting / confusing
      • Not even close to what the ad-hype promises
      • Raw data is not available (yet...)
      • The report prints like a grade-school project

      Best Uses

Comments about Geno 2.0 Next Generation Genographic Helix DNA Ancestry Kit, U.S. Delivery:

Two kits purchased as gifts for our remaining paternal and maternal males. For starters we wished this could be an easier test, like a cheek swab. This is a LOT of spit for an elderly man to come up with. Uncle's test failed; we are waiting for a replacement. Dad's test OK for maternal regional and deep ancestry. In particular regarding haplogroup the results flow and make sense. Paternal haplogroup info was very confusing. The haplogroup given did not show up anyplace else, and the line itself did not match anything else in the report. We have attempted contact three times and have been given a giant brush-off by CSRs who know nothing about the Genomic Project but would not connect us to someone who could actually help. Are we supposed to trust this data when one CSR kept saying "halo-group" and twice we were told our questions were Helix's responsibility? (BTW Helix sent us straight back to National Geographic - said they do ONLY the sequencing, not the interpretation). Additionally, although there is a Print option it does not provide the complete report and what does print is an amateurish mess, with no sensible page-breaks and disastrous graphics. We were not expecting a fancy print job from National Geographic; but for this price we should be able to at least print a keepsake quality report ourselves! Lastly we keep getting the runaround on raw data. Told again today they are "working on it". We went with National Geographic for the scientific contribution. Wish we had gone with ANY other genealogy / DNA analysis option!

Comments about Geno 2.0 Next Generation Genographic Helix DNA Ancestry Kit, U.S. Delivery:

The most specific information I received consisted of a world map of Europe with a huge blurry circle on it over Eastern Europe. I already knew much more than that. I was hoping to learn where my ancestors came from. Instead, I learned very general information about humans and neanderthal migrationthat I could find in many books and magazine, but virtually nothing personally insightful. This was such a disappointment!

This is a HORRIBLE waste of money. Unless you were adopted and know NOTHING about your past, you wont learn anything new. I cannot express how disappointed I was to read the "results". They could have been about anyone who's parents came to America from Europe. I just read another woman's comments about how bad this is and she is NOT KIDDING!!!! Not to mention it took 4 months to get the results. Don't get ripped off..... I may sue them in Small Claims. I am not happy.

What a huge disappointment it was to receive the results! This kit is more expensive than other kits available and yet the results are so high level they provide almost no insights. Other kits provide details like countries whereas you here get a region like "Western European" which covers a broad group of countries. I knew I was from Europe - the question was exactly where in Europe. I cannot believe we spent this much money on close to nothing!
