History books traditionally depict the pre-Columbus Americas as a pristine wilderness where small native villages lived in harmony with nature. But scientific evidence tells us that America wasn't exactly a "New World," but a very old one whose inhabitants had built a vast infrastructure of cities, orchards, canals, and causeways. But after Columbus set foot in the Americas, an endless wave of explorers, conquistadors, and settlers arrived, and with each of their ships came a Noah's Ark of plants, animals—and disease. In the first 100 years of contact, entire civilizations were wiped out and the landscape was changed forever.

National Geographic embarks on an expedition into the mysterious world of ancient American history to shed a different light on the history of the Americas.

Bonus program: Columbus Landfall.

Wrongly named

From the title I should have seen a documentary on AMERICA before Columbus. Instead a lot of information on Europe and America AFTER Columbus was what I saw. I expected to see a documentary only about the Americas and the inhabitants, fauna and flora. Though most of it was educational it was NOT what the title stated! PS Don't show a donkey then call it a mule. Somebody wasn't paying attention with that detail. How many other details weren't correct?

America Before Columbus

Why did the film end with the white guy dropping coins into the black man's cup while the narrator speaks of the melting pot? Unnecessary.

Excellent lesson

Great resource for the History teacher.

This was so informative and have been telling everyone about this episode! Learned a great deal more than what I was taught in grade school! Learning about how Christopher Columbus' exploration was formed and finally granted by the Queen of Spain....then the voyage itself! I was most saddened when watching the destruction of our planets trees (which we still do til this day)! Explaining the transference of two different diseases (in my opinion are the combined precursor of todays cancers) and how global slavery came into existence. What an amazing program and hope EVERYONE could see this in order to see the world as it truly was and its development into what it is today. Thank you National Geographic!!

Great teacher's resource

This corresponds with the WV 4th grade Social Studies CSO's in an interesting way. Can be used to reinforce what has been taught and/or an introduction to new material.
