Overview

National Geographic's World map is the standard by which all other reference maps are measured. The World map is meticulously researched and adheres to National Geographic's convention of making independent, apolitical decisions based on extensive research using multiple authoritative source.

The Decorator style World map uses a vibrant color palette that fills each country for easy identification and stunning shaded relief that will stand out as a beautiful piece of cartographic artistry. Drawn in the Winkel Tripel projection, distortions are minimized and unlike many other World maps, Greenland is show the same size as Argentina and not as the size of all of South America.

Thousands of place names are carefully and artistically placed on the map to maintain legibility even in the heavily populated ares of Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Details include clearly defined international boundaries, cities, physical features, rivers, and ocean floor features. Corner inset maps feature vegetation and land use, and population density as well as the north and south polar regions.

Enlarged maps provide an immersive experience in any home or office environment. The exceptional cartography is even easier to appreciate at the larger size. The map is encapsulated in heavy-duty 1.6 mil laminate which makes the paper much more durable and resistant to the swelling and shrinking caused by changes in humidity. Laminated maps can be framed without the need for glass, so the fames can be much lighter and less expensive.

This is a very, very beautiful map.

I love this map. It was too big for me to hang myself, and the first thing the friend who helped me said was "this map is awesome!" I have it hanging right over my work desk (it nearly covers the wall behind it) so that if I read something making a geographic reference or hear a reference on TV I can quickly find the location. It adds a big splash of color to the wall. If it was 8' x 6' I would like it even better!

Poor Packaging-Product Damaged

The map has great color and details, but arrived in poor shape due to the lack of packaging. Very disappointed in the torn sides and wrinkled appearance. The map has been laying flat for over a week and the wrinkles are apparent.

Slightly disappointed...

We bought this map to give as a wedding present to two teacher friends. Its a bit disappointing that it is 2007 but we did know that when we bought it. The bigger issue is that the laminating process has left the map looking a bit streaked in certain light conditions. We will still give it as a gift but would not likely order laminated product again.

Suberb Maps!

I've had this map for 9 years, as soon as it finally dies, I will buy another, and am considering buying similar US map. My kids are all growing up learning about the world from it as the primary guide to people and places.

I don't recommend it

High quality map and lamination, but... The biggest problem I have with it, though, is the low contrast of the text against the background colours. The description said, brightly-coloured. Well, the map I received had quite dark, rich colours that first of all make the map look dark and gloomy, which I don't like, secondly, they make it difficult to read any text (countries, cities etc) due to very low contrast... I have a perfect vision, and even I struggle -- and it's a decent size map! Never had such issue with any map before, so it was no way anticipated.
