National Geographic's World map is the standard by which all other reference maps are measured. The World map is meticulously researched and adheres to National Geographic's convention of making independent, apolitical decisions based on extensive research using multiple authoritative source.

The signature Classic style map uses a bright, easy to read color palette featuring blue oceans and stunning shaded relief that has been featured on National Geographic wall maps for over 75 years. Drawn in the Winkel Tripel projection, distortions are minimized and unlike many other World maps, Greenland is show the same size as Argentina and not as the size of all of South America.

Thousands of place names are carefully and artistically placed on the map to maintain legibility even in the heavily populated areas of Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Details include clearly defined international boundaries, cities, physical features, rivers, and ocean floor features. Corner inset maps feature vegetation and land use, and population density as well as the north and south polar regions.

Mural Maps are printed on a tear-resistant, coated paper to achieve a combination of exceptional strength, color protection, and long life. Mural Maps can be hung using heavy duty (clay based) wallpaper paste. The map is coated to resist dirt and dust and may be cleaned with a slightly dampened cloth.

Great Map

I've had this map on my classroom wall for 10 years now. My 6th graders love it! It really enhances learning in the classroom and gets my students enthusiastic about geography.

Beautiful and detailed!

We installed this fabulous world map in our living room/playroom. It immediately became the focal point. In deciding between the "Classic" and "Executive" colors we felt it would be fun for our children to grow up with the classic map colors in the playroom, and they are truly beautiful. Based on prior reviews we opted to hire a professional wallpaper installer and it was well worth the investment. The bids were $250-$350 in our area. The professional commented that this National Geographic wall map is the best map product she's seen in terms of paper quality and design and wanted to add the finished map to her photo gallery of jobs. It may help someone to know that it is not necessary to double-cut due to the overlap. Also, the map expanded about 3/8" when the paste was applied, so that should be taken into account when measuring the fit on the wall. We are thrilled with our wall map and highly recommend it to others!

Buying my third map today

I have two maps and am ordering a third. The first one was hung by a professional wallpaper hanger. Everyone that enters my house is drawn to it. The second one is hanging by pushpins in a community college classroom. The students love it; they can find the destinations of their dreams and see the movement of history easily. It is better than a power point because it's there for after-class conversations!

A good purchase

I purchased this several years ago for my condo. Pins were put into it for travel with my wife, travel alone and travel with others, A great conversation piece, It was installed by others using the recommended paste. It went together well. I use it to find place names in crossword puzzles, and to trace travel when I am reading sea stories and spy stories. I have just moved to a house and will soon be ordering a new one.

Awesome centre piece for child's room!

I had one of these in my room as a child, and now my son has one too. This is actually our second one, as we recently moved, and I purchased and installed this for his new room. In fact, the people who purchased our old house commented on the uniqueness of the map. Installation can be a little difficult and lining up the text and lat/long lines can be challenging. To further add to the challenge, each panel overlaps by about 1/2" or so. Having perfectly cut panels that butt up against each other would have made installation easier. Installation is definitely a 2 person job (thanks Dad!) and requires patience. Overall, a great product that is a conversation starter, looks great in a room, and promotes a greater awareness and understanding of the world.
