The Genographic Project

National Geographic’s Genographic Project is a multiyear research initiative using cutting-edge technology to uncover humankind’s deep ancestry and better understand our shared genetic roots. With the help of participants around the world, anthropologist Miguel Vilar and a team of renowned scientists are unlocking the human story.

The Science Behind the Kit

When DNA is passed from one generation to the next, most of it is recombined by the processes that give each of us our individuality. But some parts of the DNA chain remain largely intact, altered only occasionally by random mutations, which become what are called genetic markers. The order in which these markers occur allows geneticists to trace our common evolutionary time line back many generations.

Your Story

Your Geno 2.0 results give you a never-before-seen view of your lineage. You’ll discover the migration paths your ancient ancestors followed thousands of years ago. You’ll also learn the details of your unique ancestral makeup—the biographical and geographical components that make up who you are. You’ll even learn if you have any Neanderthal DNA.

Our Story

Your results are just the beginning. By regularly visiting the Genographic Project website, you’ll find out more as Genographic scientists pull together connections, uncover new paths, and provide fresh insights into your lineage. If you choose to create a personal profile, you can connect with others around the world who share your deep ancestry.

The Human Story

Working together, we are unveiling the story of us—how our ancestors migrated from Africa to populate the Earth tens of thousands of years ago. If we all share such a common ancestry, why do we look so different? That’s just one of the important questions the Genographic Project is asking. Through your participation, you can help us answer them.

Strange as it sounds, clicking through the paths that my ancient ancestors took out of Africa and across the world made me feel a connection to them across time. And, it turns out, my maternal line is pretty rare Taíno one! So I also get to enjoy being pretty unique.

Ben K

I have tried 23andMe and AncestryDNA and found the National Geographic experience with Helix to the (most) best.
