About the test

National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Dr. Spencer Wells and team designed Geno 2.0 Next Generation based on the new technologies and insights that emerged since the launch of the Genographic Project ten years ago. Using a custom-built genotyping chip, we test nearly 750,000 DNA markers, many of which have been specifically selected to provide highly detailed ancestry-related information.

Geno 2.0 Next Generation is the official ancestry kit of The Great Human Race. This groundbreaking National Geographic Channel program follows survival expert Cat Bigney and archaeologist Bill Schindler as they attempt to live the way our ancestors did 2.6 million years ago. Join the Genographic Project and trace your own ancestral path with Geno 2.0 Next Generation as Cat and Bill trace the path of Homo sapiens through the East African savanna and beyond.

By participating, you will:

•  Discover the migration paths your ancient ancestors followed hundreds—even thousands—of years ago, with an unprecedented view of your ancestral journey.
•  Learn what percentage of your genome is affiliated with more than a dozen regions of the world—more than were possible with previous Geno kits.
•  Have the opportunity to share your story and connect with other Genographic Project participants, helping us fill in the gaps in the human story.

What's included in the Geno 2.0 Next Generation DNA Test kit:

The Geno 2.0 Next Generation kit contains everything you need to begin the journey into your past, including painless cheek swabs and instructions for submitting your DNA samples (return postage required). Plus, we’ve designed the Geno 2.0 Next Generation kit box to serve as a beautiful keepsake to store your results after you access them online.

Once you have completed the cheek swabbing process, you will secure the swabs inside the transport tubes, complete the informed consent form and mail the tubes and form off to the lab using the supplied envelope. It can take the lab several weeks to process and analyze your DNA. In the meantime, you can visit the Genographic web site to see where your sample is in the analysis process and learn about current processing times.

The Kit will include a “Consent to Genetic Testing” form that will have to be agreed to prior to sending in the sample for processing.

How your participation helps the Genographic Project:

The Genographic Project is an ambitious attempt to help answer fundamental questions about where humankind originated and how we came to populate the Earth. Using the latest genetic and computational technologies to analyze historical patterns in DNA from participants around the world, our team of world-renowned scientists led by Dr. Spencer Wells, seeks to reveal our migratory history and to better understand the connections and differences that make up humankind.

As a Genographic Project participant, you will have the opportunity to contribute your data to our Genographic database, helping our scientists and researchers who are working to chart a comprehensive map of the early stages of human history. Participation in the Genographic Project database is your choice and is not necessary to access your individual results.

And a portion of the proceeds from the sales of Geno 2.0 Next Generation kits are channeled back into the project to support additional research and to fund cultural conservation and revitalization efforts for indigenous communities around the world through the Genographic Legacy Fund.

Find more details on the Genographic Project on the About the Project page. Read Cara Santa Maria's interview with Spencer Wells here.

Due to the cost of the DNA analysis, once the kit has been opened, we cannot accept returns or administer refunds. You must have Internet access to view the results—results will not be mailed. Results are available online via confidential Genographic Project ID 10 weeks after our lab receives your DNA samples. If you lose the ID provided with the kit, we cannot recover your information. Each kit contains supplies for testing one person. Please note, because women do not carry a Y chromosome, this test will not reveal direct paternal deep ancestry for female participants. Women will learn other information about their paternal side of the family, however.

The Genographic Project does not test for medical information. Please read the complete terms and conditions of purchase. You must be 18 years or older to purchase a kit. Parental or guardian consent is required for participation of a child under 18.

Geno 2.0 has $9.95 Shipping & Handling (S&H) per kit for delivery. Customers shipping Geno 2.0 kits to Canada will be charged $10 for S&H plus $9.95 per kit. Customers shipping to countries other than the United States and Canada will be charged $20 per order for S&H plus $9.95 per kit. Additional fees apply for expedited shipping.

Canadians be careful

The DNA kit will end end up in the 250$ (CDN) range. All charges are in US funds including the sales tax!

Best, deepest analysis out there!

Solved a long-standing but unproven aspect of our family's ancestry. We knew our most distant ancestor came from England to Connecticut around 1635 and now it's confirmed his ancestors were Scandinavian. Made a trip to Sweden long ago and never realized we were home! The maternal lineage was nice to know about also. The extended family tree back to Africa is incredible! Great to add our data to NatGeo's growing database!

Horrible product and waste of money....

For the price of this product you should be able to get ALL of your results but sadly you can not without paying additional fees to FTDNA. To do any ancestry sites you need the autosomal results as raw data which NG 2.0 will not give you. You can however transfer your results to FTDNA and pay an additional $40 to get these results that EVERY other DNA test includes for much less money. Total sham IMO.

GENO 2.0

there is no way to print results. When you go to 'download' it will not download the total 27 page results. When I go to print, it will only print the first 14 'general' pages. The next 13 pages print blank, does not match what I see on the screen. for the money I spent I should be able to print all pages. Please Please please I am begging you, allow me to print ALL pages!!!

Geno 2.0 DNA Kit - a good start but a disappointing finish

Assuming the technical analysis of the provided DNA sample was done with the highest level of scientific integrity then the basic results provided are good. But I was highly disappointed that the historical analysis did not provide the user the ability to make or access maps regarding historical migration of haplogroups. I had assumed that "Natgeo" would be all about providing user friendly maps that could be saved (jpg. png, tif, etc.), manipulated and used by the customer. Second, only after the fact did I find out that my data could be shared with the "FamilyTree DNA" system and that all my DNA SNPs had not been analyzed as deeply as I had assumed - therefore I will have to pay more $$ to get further analysis of my DNA to get the whole picture/history. Not well communicated from the "NatGEo" side of the process. And again disappointing. I would recommend this product with caution.

Everyone should do this!

This project is phenomenal. The kit was quick, painless, and easy to use. Information provided was detailed yet straightforward. The web interface is fantastic, with detailed information about the underlying research as well as interpretation of individual results. The links to related topics and deeper scientific explanations are wonderful. I truly believe everyone should take part in this project or one similar to enhance not only a sense of self-awareness and personal identity, but also to contribute to the science and our understanding of the human race.

DNA kit

I thought it would be useful to include country boundaries. The arrows showing human migration didn't mean much without knowing which countries they were crossing or landing in. I'd like to know how this compares to the other DNA testing services- my friends will show me their results. Their results show what percentage Italian or whatever they are. This does nothing like that. The explanations were hard for me to understand. Basically, My DNA came out of Africa with a few stops along the way. I'm disappointed, especially for the cost.
