Throughout the Indian subcontinent, elephants have been domesticated for centuries. Elephant handlers, or mahouts, work closely with one elephant for its entire life and develop a respectful bond with their powerful and majestic charges. Using a unique northern Indian technique, artisans craft these desktop sculptures using leather hand-shaped over a papier-mâché form. An elephant posed with its trunk up is considered an auspicious symbol of good fortune. 10"W x 11"H.
