The three-masted racing schooner
Atlantic was buit for Wilson Marshall at the Townsend and Downey shipyard. Her greatest claim to fame came in 1905 when she was one of eleven yachts to compete for the Emperor's Cup put up by Kaiser Wilhelm for a race between Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and Lizard Head, England, at the tip of Cornwall. Vetern America's Cup captain Charles Barr drove the
Atlantic through violent weather and crossed in 12 days, 4 hours. Her single day's run on May 23 to 24 was 348 miles, a feat that has still not been beaten. Her overall time remained unbeaten for more than 60 years. Sold to James Cox Bradley afterward, she saw duty as a sub chaser during World War I. Cornelius Vanderbilt bought her after the war, although he rarely raced her. During World War II the U.S. Coast Guard used her for antisubmarine duty, and she was used for sail training at the Coast Guard Academy until 1947.
This handsome model is handmade from scratch by master boat buildersno pre-fabricated model components are involved. Consulting plans, drawings, and photographs, hundreds of hours are spend on each model to replicate the wood, rigging, and sails to a tee. The lines are working lines; they can be tightened and loosened to raise and lower the sails.
