Maestro glassmakers on the Venetian island of Murano use furnaces and techniques that have changed very little since the 13th century.
These graceful glass doves, le colombe in Italian, are a worldwide symbol of peace as well as evidence of Murano's continued place as a center for remarkable art glass. They are created by scooping molten glass on the end of a long metal rod, which is twisted, turned, and pulled as the liquid glass takes the shape of the dove's body and wings.
While the glass is still pliable, 24-karat gold leaf is added to create streaks of textural shimmer. Each piece is handmade, resulting in variations that give each dove its own subtle personality. An excellent gift for art glass or bird collectors, and a serene symbol for the holiday season and year-round. Handblown in Italy. Approximately 5 1/2''W x 4 1/2''H x 5''D.
