During the earliest days of cartography, maps were one-of-a-kind works of art, available only to those who had the resources to fund costly expeditions. Painstakingly crafted maps and globes cast light on previously uncharted corners of the world, and were as much works of art as products of a swiftly evolving science.

National Geographic's Limited Edition Everest World Globe combines some of the world's finest materials and skilled craftsmanship with the cartographic research for which the Society is renowned. Only 250 of these exquisite illuminated heirlooms are being created.

First, artisans create a mouth-blown glass globe, and use a 500-year-old traditional technique to adhere a dual-sided map to its surface. When illuminated, the effect is like stained glass. The base is hand carved from maple and hornbeam woods from Germany's Black Forest. Months and cardinal directions are inlaid into the base using mother-of-pearl. Finally, a polished brass meridian encircles the globe.
