Howard Carter was born in London. His talent for drawing and his interest in Egyptian antiquities took him to Egypt when he was still only 17, in the autumn of 1891. In 1900 he was appointed Chief Inspector of Antiquities to the Egyptian Government with responsibilities for Upper Egypt. In 1922, as the chief archaeologist for Lord Carnarvon's expedition, Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamen. He died on March 2, 1939, in London.
