Archaeologists believe that China's first emperor Qin commissioned a vast army of more than 8,000 life-size terra cotta soldiers to guard him in the afterlife. Ever since farmers accidentally uncovered this underground army in 1974, the terra cotta warriors of Qin Shihuangdi have intrigued scientists, historians, and travelers alike.
This wooden chessboard and detailed resin pieces are based on the many individual sculptures still in situ in their burial chamber outside of Xi'an, Shaanxi province, China. The pieces store inside the hinged board.
