Hosted by renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey explores how we discovered the laws of nature and found our coordinates in space and time. It brings to life never-before-told stories of the heroic quest for knowledge and transports viewers to new worlds and across the universe for a vision of the cosmos on the grandest scale.

Cosmos invents new modes of scientific storytelling to reveal the grandeur of the universe and re-invents celebrated elements of the legendary 1980 series hosted by Carl Sagan, including the Cosmic Calendar and the Ship of the Imagination. The most profound scientific concepts are presented with stunning clarity, uniting skepticism and wonder, and weaving rigorous science with the emotional and spiritual into a transcendent experience.

Bonus features: audio commentary on premiere episode, Library of Congress dedication, "Cosmos at Comic-con,” "Cosmos: The Voyage Continues,” and interactive cosmic calendar.

Not available for shipment outside of the U.S. and Canada.

Episode 1: Standing Up in the Milky Way
The Ship of the Imagination, unfettered by ordinary limits on speed and size, drawn by the music of cosmic harmonies, can take us anywhere in space and time. It has been idling for more than three decades, and yet it has not been overtaken. Its global legacy remains vibrant. Now, it’s time once again to set sail for the stars.

Episode 2: The Rivers of Life
Life is transformation. Artificial selection turned the wolf into the shepherd and all the other canine breeds we love today. And over the eons, natural selection can sculpt the exquisitely complex human eye out of a microscopic patch of pigment. The Ship of the Imagination is on a voyage of exploration of the relatedness of all life on Earth and the possible evolution of life in the cosmic context.

Episode 3: When Knowledge Conquered Fear
The Ship of the Imagination is half-way out to the nearest star, in the brooding, frigid realm of the Oort Cloud, where a trillion comets wait. Our Ship takes us on a hair-raising ride, chasing a single comet through its million-year plunge towards the Sun.

Our understanding of these things was made possible by the friendship between the brilliant polymath, Edmond Halley and that tormented paragon of genius, Isaac Newton. Through Halley’s patience and selfless generosity, Newton will conquer his fearful isolation and find the courage to publish his masterwork, the Principia Mathematica.

Episode 4: Hiding in the Light
The Window on the Past in the Ship of the Imagination reveals a two-thousand-year-old Chinese movie, the violent suppression of free thought and speech by China’s first emperor and makes us an eyewitness to the world’s first book-burning. We visit the Europe and North Africa of the 11th century, to the golden age of Islam, when Arabic was the language of science.

Episode 5: A Sky Full of Ghosts
An exploration of how light, time and gravity combine to distort our perceptions of the universe. We eavesdrop on a series of walks along a beach on summer nights in the year 1809. William Herschel, whose many discoveries include the insight that telescopes are time machines, tells bedtime stories to his beautiful young son, John, who will grow up to make some rather profound discoveries of his own. A menacing stranger lurks nearby. All three of them figure into the funhouse reality of tricks that light plays with time and gravity.

Episode 6: Deeper, Deeper, Deeper Still
Science casts its Cloak of Visibility over everything, including Neil, himself, to see him as a man composed of his constituent atoms. The Ship of the Imagination takes us on an epic voyage to the bottom of a dewdrop to discover the exotic life forms and violent conflict that’s unfolding there. We return to the surface to encounter life’s ingenious strategies for sending its ancient message into the future.

Episode 7: The Clean Room
The little known but heroic story of a guy from Iowa that can’t really be told without going all the way back to the time long before the Earth was formed—to the origin of the elements in the hearts of stars. The tempestuous youth of the Earth effectively erased all traces of its beginnings. How to ever know its true age?

Episode 8: Sisters of the Sun
The constellation of the Pleiades provides a vehicle for us to explore a series of paradoxes and epochal discoveries for humanity. The Ship of the Imagination takes us on a voyage of exploration of the lives and deaths of stars—including our own. We travel through the Window on the Future to experience the last perfect day on Earth… and to the world of a binary star system to witness its end.

Episode 9: The Electric Boy
Our world of high technology and instantaneous electronic communication with each other, and with our robotic emissaries at the solar system’s frontier, is de-mystified through the inspiring life story of the man whose genius Albert Einstein revered. We begin with the mystery that be-deviled Isaac Newton: How do the planets know that the distant Sun is pulling on them? How all the apples know how to fall?

Episode 10: The Lost Worlds of Planet Earth
The Ship of the Imagination takes us on a journey through space and time to grasp how the autobiography of the Earth is written in its atoms, its oceans, its continents, and all living things. The past is another planet&151;any, actually—and we will bring several of them back to life and ride the Ship of the Imagination to a vision of the Earth a quarter of a billion years into the future.

Episode 11: The Immortals
Must we die? Are there beings in the cosmos who live forever, traveling on an endless journey down the river of time? Do civilizations have finite lifespans? What happened to Uruq? Why did the great ancient civilizations perish?

Episode 12: The World Set Free
Neil grapples with the conundrum of our failure to take what science is telling us to heart. We evoke the memory of other, far more “impossible” challenges and touch on the unanticipated gift of Apollo. We conclude with a breath-taking vision of the magnificent future that is scientifically and technically within our grasp, if we will only awaken from our stupor and seize it.

Episode 13: Unafraid of the Dark
We’ve traveled such a long way together, from deep inside the heart of an atom clear out to the cosmic horizon, from the beginning of time to the distant future…We’re ready to perform an experiment. It’s a thought experiment so all you’ll need is brain. If you do it correctly, the vastness and mystery of the cosmos is the inescapable result. We explore the tenets of science’s ethos and how it made all this possible. We conclude our spacetime odyssey with a personal declaration of science as a spiritual experience.

This is the best series that has appeared on television - or anywhere else - for a long time. It is informative, entertaining, and thought-provoking.

Dr. Tyson takes the viewer on an extraordinary voyage through space, time, and history. We see our place in the universe, and are introduced to the brilliant people who made discoveries that shaped our modern world.

The Cosmos series should be required viewing for all students from Grade 5 and up, through university, and I would certainly recommend this package to all families. It's a beautifully produced show that will change your perspective, and leave you feeling better connected to the world around us.
