Self-winding watches were first successfully produced in 1923, improving on an unreliable perpetual watch invented in 1770. A small metal weight hangs inside, and movements of the wearer’s wrist cause the weight to turn gears that wind the watch spring. The glass face lets you see the mechanism in action.
