This tough little robot is easy to build in less than an hour, and just one motor powers three complex motions. His “angry” walk is giggle-worthy, but if he falls over, he’ll pick himself right up and keep on stomping. He can also dance and do somersaults. A huge hit at Tokyo’s massive International Robot Exhibition, this pint-size robot kit is a great introduction to gears and motors.

WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD—small parts not for children under 3 years.

For ages 8 and up. Two AA batteries, not included. 4 1/4"W x 8"H x 3"D.

National Geographic is home to a thoughtful selection of educational kids toys, games, activity kits, books, and more that engage young minds and foster a lifetime of discovery through fun and hands-on learning. The leading concept in 21st-century education is STEM—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It’s a cross-disciplinary approach to learning that entrepreneurs and educators believe is key to a healthy innovation economy. At National Geographic we believe that art and design also play a vital role in exploration, so we count ourselves among those who take a broader view: from STEM to STEAM.

We’re proud to have been supporters of STEAM learning since long before the acronym was invented. Anyone who has watched a child open a present only to set the gift aside and play with the box knows that kids have an innate curiosity and desire to explore and understand their world. National Geographic explorers never lose that curiosity, and it has lead to some of the most remarkable discoveries in the last 125 years.

        Cons

        • Falls apart while running
        • Flimsy
        • Pins Keep Coming Out

        Best Uses

          Comments about Tumbling Robot Kit:

My seven and a half year old son really enjoyed putting this together (with help--it's a bit tricky), and is entertained by the silly robot movements. But it is flimsy, and pieces keep coming off while the robot is moving, especially the red pins that hold its legs on. Not a high quality toy.

Tumbling Robot Kit - fun but difficult

          Pros

          • fun

          Cons

          • Difficult instructions
          • Switch Not Working

          Best Uses

            Comments about Tumbling Robot Kit:

The instructions were difficult to follow but we eventually got it working. It's very difficult to get a battery in with the switch pushed down, and if you don't push the switch down, then when you connect the connector, the robot comes to life in your hands and starts tumbling, and bits fall off.
Once we got it working, it was fun watching it tumble and try to get up. We'd recommend this product only for experienced model builders.
