Art and craft aren’t just hobbies on the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali. Many people make their living as artisans, and crafts such as woodcarving and silver-smithing have long histories. The Balinese artist who creates this delicate arced necklace began learning woodcarving from his grandfather, an architect and master carver, when he was still a child. But after graduating, he began apprenticing with a silversmith in his village. Today he combines those skills to create jewelry that borrows motifs from traditional Balinese architecture. Here, sterling silver swirls around a small faceted garnet and an iridescent moonstone.
