Mountains encircle the tiny African kingdom of Swaziland, including one that resembles a basking crocodile. Atop the mountain is an ancient iron ore mine, and at the foot of the mountain is the village of Ngwenya, the Siswati word for "crocodile." It is here that Swazi artisans breathe life into recycled glass to create these charming interpretations of animals found in southern African grasslands.
All of the items made by this group are 100% recycled glass, mostly soft drink bottles collected from all over the country. Ngwenya Glass partners with local school groups to teach them about conservation and reuse. The children help volunteer for roadside clean-up campaigns, and any glass they turn up gets reused by the artisans. In exchange, Ngwenya Glass contributes to school building materials and also sponsors the soccer team.
Each handcrafted zebra and giraffe has its own unique personality; please accept some variation.
