The Kikuyu people live in the shadow of Mt. Kenyaknown locally as Kirinyagathe earthly resting place of the Kikuyu creator Ngai. In this striking piece, two figures, male and female, are carved from a single piece of solid wood, representing the Kikuyu’s traditional vision of fertility, wealth, and health. These bold figurines suggest the interconnected nature of the visible and invisible forces of the Kikuyu belief system. Each pair is handmade by female artisans working in a community-based organization dedicated to fair trade practices, sustainable livelihoods, and economic empowerment for the rural women of the Kikuyu tribe.
