disappointing

This was the single most disappointing gift I gave for Christmas. The stones don't fit in it and the lid just floats with no secure latch or notch to hold the lid in place. This is not practical or designed to use. I thought National Geographic would have higher quality standards so I bought it assuming it would be beautiful and usable. It is beautiful but I will return it and feel embarrassed that i gave it for a gift.

I learned of this game on a visit to my mother's home in Southern Oregon. Her set was easy to learn and easy to play over and over again because the "used/captured" pieces fit onto the circular groove around the game (let's call this the moat). In her version as each piece is jumped, you can place the marble into the moat so that the stones/marbles can quickly and easily be set up again for a second game. With this version the stones are too large which means they are spaced too close together and on many occasions I knocked adjoining pieces out of their resting spots. As I jumped stones and placed them in the moat I quickly discovered that they did not all fit in the moat and I was forced to hold the extra pieces while trying to complete the game. Buy this version for desktop display purposes but get a different set if you plan on playing the game. The cards are not a worthwhile addition and will probably not be used.
I gave it 3 stars due to the beauty of the game only.

I was delighted when I received this item, a gift for my geologist son, in the mail. It is beautifully presented and displays a range of semi precious stones in a variety of subtle colours.

The quality of the product is good but needs to have a latch in order to keep it closed. Without this we are not able to display or take on trips.

We bought this board when we lived in Tananarive, Madagascar and each Friday (market day) picked out a different geod to add to board until it was a complete game. 35 years later this is favorite game for all the children who come to our home...ages 3 to 75! And the geods are educational!
