Give a one-of-a-kind heirloom with this wooden Victorian jigsaw puzzle based on up-to-date topographical mapping data. We’ve added to the challenge by not including a guide print, but you’ll know where to start because the centerpiececentered on your chosen addressis shaped like a house. The map slowly reveals itself piece by piece as you assemble your neighborhood, starting with familiar areas and discovering new ones along the way.
Pick any street address in the United States and we'll craft a 300-piece puzzle using 3mm European birch plywood, with your chosen address at the center of a six-by-four-mile scale map. Not only is each piece of the puzzle a different shape, but 15 of those pieces are novelty shapes called "whimsies," because puzzle-makers in the 19th century cut them on a whim. Your map puzzle will show main roads, contour lines, water features, vegetation, and notable buildings.

Which mapping base is used? We use the Delorme North America Raster Map base. This is a modern, street-style, topographical map base, which reveals most major roads and names many but not all streets, towns, cities, lakes, streams, and selected points of interest. The mapping also includes contours and a subtle relief shading effect.
How old is the mapping? The Delorme mapping we use is taken from their 2012 dataset.
How much area will my puzzle cover? The puzzle always covers six miles east to west and four miles north to south. The center will have a house-shaped piece, which is a good place to start!
Will my street be named? Not always. Delorme includes more than 7.1 million miles of roads in this dataset. They aim to label as many streets as possible but there isn’t space to label every street. There is a balance between naming every street and leaving room to display other local information such as neighborhood names and points of interest.
Why is my jigsaw not centered correctly? We have invested in the latest up-to-date technology to help us center on a full street address with zip code. However, in some rural areas the geocoding engines cannot site center with as much accuracy as is possible with more urban areas; in rare circumstances, your house may be slightly off center. If this happens, all we need is the latitude and longitude of your chosen center point to re-create your puzzle to that exact location.
Comments about ''My Town'' Custom Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle:
I received this as a gift two years ago. To be quite honest, I initially thought that receiving a puzzle was rather corny. I honestly have to say that this low-tech gift was one of the best, most-thoughtful gifts I have received.
I have to use the creative side of my brain (for work) and I found that putting together a puzzle, helps with mental blocks. In the past two years, my puzzle has gotten me out many cerebral ruts. I like the fact that the map/puzzle is an attractive depiction of my hometown (NYC). I am also impressed that the puzzle is wooden, instead of cardboard. The pieces feel "formidable" in the hand, quite substantial.
Kudos to National Geographic; I am thoroughly impressed to see that you are carrying this item!!!
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
