The world watched in horror on March 11, 2011, as the fourth largest earthquake ever recorded crippled Japan and triggered a massive tsunami that swallowed entire communities, leaving an unprecedented catastrophe in its wake. All the while, amateur videographers, news crews, tourists and countless others were recording the sights and sounds of the unfolding chaos. From the producers of the critically acclaimed Witness Katrina, National Geographic presents a powerful firsthand look at the tragedy, entirely through the eyes of those who experienced it.

This disaster was a heart breaker and could have been minimized with common sense. Japan has a history of Earth quakes and Tsunami's. So build nuclear plants up and away, yet accessible, to the waters of the ocean and store tanks of water to use when disaster strikes the plants Stop development in areas that are low and down toward the ocean (there are many) as water seeks the easiest path of resistance. Never underestimate the power of water.

Absolutely Riveting...

Pros

  • Awesome footage

Cons

  • Wish I spoke Japanese

Best Uses

This is spectacular footage. I had no idea of the potential devastation of Mother Nature before this.
There is almost no narration... something odd. But truthfully, none is required.

    It is perfectly produced.

Some of the voices are translated, but I wish I spoke Japanese.

    • The ultimate reality show
    • You really feel the fear

    Cons

You don't get the immediacy, the fear, the raw emotion from news coverage. This is first hand video from non-professionals who are living this disaster. I was riveted.

Some much to cover, so little time

As the areas affected and why were very large this report could be better sold in a combo pack to describe in more detail about the earthquake, the tsunami, and why it happened. The report itself was good but had limited time to present the disaster. Hope to see an update report on the recovery.

I bought the DVD for potential classroom use but was so disappointed that the DVD was totally lacking in any type of scientific explanation or commentary. It was just a compilation of things already on the internet from other sources and even those were edited so you didn't get the full effect of the longer versions. Lacked any info on the nuclear power plant problem, rescue efforts etc. I would not have purchased it had I realized these things.

          Gripping Video

I bought this to show to my students. The best way to understand the magnitude of this horrible event is through the eyes of those who experienced it. This video illustrates the terror of the earthquake and shows the sheer terror and fascination an approaching tsunami can hold. I highly recommend this video as well as Witness: Katrina.
