In the deep blue waters of Mexico's Gulf of California, large and ravenous predators congregate. They are Humboldt—or Jumbo—squid and some local fishermen fear them more than sharks. In the recent past, large populations have appeared in the Gulf, and then disappeared, for years at a time. One scientist is on a mission to solve the mystery of the squid's migrations and to improve our understanding of a creature that may grow as large as a human being.
