Irish Sweater Jacket
Aran knitting is well known for its wealth of intricate stitches and symbolism. In this flattering sweater jacket, the diamond stitch represents prosperity, and the cable stitch stands in for the fishing rope that was so essential to livelihood on the Aran Islands. Knit from 100% worsted wool, with a button closure at the neck.
100% worsted wool. Made in Ireland. 29"L. Women’s sizes S (4–6), M (8–10), L (12–14), XL (16–18), XXL (20).
Hand-wash or dry clean.
The thick-knit, cream-colored sweater that we often associate with fishermen has its origins on the Aran Islands at the mouth of Galway Bay in western Ireland. Enterprising women on the islands began knitting the sweaters in the early 1900s, using untreated, lanolin-rich wool. The goal was not only to provide a heavy and water-resistant garment to keep their families warm in Galway Bay's rough weather, but also to supplement the island's fishing economy by making a craft that could be sold year-round and utilized traditional skills and patterns. Journalist and Irish culture activist Pádraig Augustine Ó Síocháin helped make the Aran sweaters especially popular in the mid-20th century by organizing the export of hand-knit sweaters to other countries.
There is a myth that families each have their own patters of stitches, and that a drowned fisherman could be recognized by the designs on his sweater, much like a Scottish clan tartan. While it's true that certain stitches have come to take on symbolic meanings, the diversity of patterns is more accurately attributed to the creative group of artisans who started making the sweaters. Always eager to show off new ideas, creative knitters developed new patterns and taught them to their friends, who added their own twists and passed the pattern along again.
Today, folks on the islands and visitors from around the world often choose sweaters based on the symbolism that the different intricate stitches have taken on. Just some of the patterns found include:
- Cable stitches represent fishing ropes and therefore the tools of a hard worker and safety on the water.
- Braided cable stitches evoke the strength of close family ties.
- Moss stitches represent abundance in nature.
- Diamond stitches mimic the shape of fishing nets mesh, the key to success on the Arans.
- Basket stitch represents a plentiful catch.
- Honeycomb stitches represent the hard work of the honeybee and the rewards of an industrious life.
- Trinity stitches are traditional Celtic motifs and signify cultural pride.

I am 5'9", 155 pounds and the Large fits me perfectly. I love the style, the weight and the cozy feel of this sweater. I chose oatmeal and the yarn, which has tiny flecks of dark brown, is beautiful - so natural and authentic. It has good weight and yet is soft. I am so pleased to see Irish Aran patterns executed in a more updated style. I love this sweater; it has already become a favorite. It is also an excellent value.

I loved the picture of the model wearing this sweater and was looking forward to owning it. I received a small and medium planning to return one. On both sweaters the upper arms are huge - not at all flattering. I really wanted to love this but after trying both sizes on multiple times I ended up returning both. Maybe that's the style of traditional Irish sweaters - the super-roomy upper arms but it didn't work for me (5'4" and 125 lbs).

Comments about Irish Sweater Jacket:
I waited for this coat to go on sale. I really love it. It is made of wool and it is a little scratchy, but no more than other wool sweaters. You can wear this as a jacket, or in cold weather at the office. I think it would be great to take on a plane. Finally I have long arms and am 5' 8". I bought the large. The sleeves are a touch too short, but it's not noticible. I would recommend this. Nicely made.

I was really looking forward to this sweater, but it was a big disappointment. Way too big, very scratchy. Such a disappointment that I returned it.

Comments about Irish Sweater Jacket:
I ordered this sweater in green and I love it. It fit perfect. The colour was wonderful. I am 5'6'' and weigh almost 250lb, I usually wear size 20. I bought the xxl and it fit perfectly and may have been a tad on the large size which I prefer. Thank you national geographic for carrying this size.

Comments about Irish Sweater Jacket:
I have bought several great sweaters from Nat Geo so was expecting better, esp for price. The garnet color looks deep and rich in photo but is more washed out in reality. I usually wear 6-8, but even small was too bulky and unflattering. Material seemed thinner than expected for outerwear, but too bulky to wear as sweater indoors. It's going back.

Comments about Irish Sweater Jacket:
I was looking forward to treating myself to this expensive sweater but was very disappointed when it arrived. It was uncomfortably scratchy, I could not have worn it for long. And the sleeves were oddly designed being very wide at the top and short toward the wrist. I ordered a small, which fit well. Don't waste your money or the $20 it will cost you to receive and return it.

Comments about Irish Sweater Jacket:
Knowing I'll most likely never have an opportunity to travel to Ireland, I purchased this gorgeous sweater jacket as a birthday gift...to me! I plan to take it on an Alaska cruise and wow the other lady passengers.
I wear a size 12 dress and ordered a Large, which is perfect for layering over other clothing without feeling restricted (above all...COMFORT!). I'll probably use a silk scarf to protect the skin on the back of my neck (COMFORT wins again!) but I don't consider this a situation that would warrant the return this lovely, well-constructed garment.
It's definitely a keeper!

Comments about Irish Sweater Jacket:
Although it is a nice sweater and my wife liked it, it fit too large - long arms, etc - and she decided it was too expensive to "accept" a less than desirable fit, so it was returned. She really needed an XS, which wasn't available... yet(?). Otherwise, we thought it was a nice sweater.

Comments about Irish Sweater Jacket:
The measurements/sizing info was conservative, so my sweater was a more looser in the chest & shoulders than expected. However, as this will be worn by me as outerwear, that's OK.
The sweater is still a work of art: the Aran designs are expertly knitted, and the green colour I chose was more beautiful than it was in the photo.
