Men have been fishing the waters off the Lusitanian coast for millennia. The Romans built outposts across the region to supply their demand for garum, a traditional Portuguese fish sauce, and one of the most beautiful of these seaside villages is Nazaré. According to local lore, the Lady of Narazéa black Madonna from the 4th centuryprotects the village that bears her name. While the Madonna may protect their boats from the rocky shoreline, it is Nazarene wives and mothers who protect their fisherman kin from the cold Atlantic waters with hand-knit sweaters. Knit in the classic Portuguese styletorcidosthese distinctive sweaters were originally made of wool that would keep the fisherman warm even if he was drenched by the waves. Each sweater is handknit so patterns may vary.
