Since ancient times, the owl and the olive branch have been featured on the Athenian currency to spread the values of the city’s patroness, Athena: victory, peace, and wisdom. The owl, with its ability to see in the darkness, represents wisdom; and the olive branch is a symbol of the goddess’s peaceful victory over Poseidon for the city of Athens. These sacred symbols propagated Athenian values of victory, peace, and wisdom throughout the ancient world, and are still featured on the Greek €1 coin.
This 24-karat-gold-plated pendant is a reproduction of a Greek drachma minted in 431-413 B.C. Athena herself is depicted on the reverse. The inscription ΑΘΗ inscription is pronounced Ath-AY and is an abbreviation of ΑΘΗΝΑΙΩN, meaning "of Athenians." Sterling silver chain.
Made in Greece. 18"L; 1"-diameter pendant. Lobster-claw clasp. The reproduction “coin” is slightly smaller than a U.S. dime.
