The Renaissance swept across Europe from its starting point in the Tuscan city of Florence, Italy. This necklace draws inspiration from jewels and gems depicted in master paintings of the era. Here, beads made of blue and green agate, onyx, carnelian, turquoise, tiger’s-eye, and rose quartz form the center of golden “flowers.” The gold is made using centuries-old lost wax casting techniques, where a form is carved out of wax, which is then covered in clay to make a mold. When the mold is fired, the wax melts, leaving a cavity that can then be filled with molten metal. Details and patterns are then engraved by hand.
