There’s more than meets the eye in these delicate chandelier-style pearl earrings, which combine Greek, Buddhist, and Javanese influences. The “shoulder” from which the charms hang is adapted from Greek jewelry of the Hellenic era, about the 3rd to 1st century B.C. The intricate sterling silver patterns are inspired by images of the Buddha’s curled hair found at Bali’s famous Borobudur temple. The gentle sway of the three drops is reminiscent of the way characters move in Java’s ancient wayang kulit shadow puppet theater. A trio of cultured pearls, in pink, black, or white, are the finishing touch.

Romance is what ties these diverse elements together. The Javanese artisan who designed and creates these pearl earrings says of his work, “My wife helps me a lot… when I think of something beautiful, I think about her. She means everything to me.”

Handcrafted in Bali, Indonesia. Sterling silver with cultured freshwater pearls. Approximately 2 5/8"L x 3/16"W.

The artisan who creates these earrings grew up in Java, but now lives and works in Bali, where he learned his trade working for a well-known jewelry designer. It was a birthday gift for his wife that eventually motivated him to open his own studio. He had made a pair of earrings for her, and she loved them. Soon her friends were asking if he could make something special for them too, and his own jewelry line was born. He’s often inspired by architecture, and enjoys learning about other world cultures, but his wife remains his greatest inspiration. “When I think of something beautiful, I think about her... She means everything to me,” he says.

These are very well made and I love the design. They are rather sophisticated, good for special occasions or evening wear. The whole design is absolutely harmonious and I love the Greek and Asian aspects, with reference to the Buddha. They have a pleasant feel, being slightly heavier than I expected but it is fine with me. The material is sterling silver which is easy to clean. The pearls are cultured and chosen carefully to be of equal size, perfectly balanced.

I was surprised at how well made they are on both sides! I feel that these are a labor of love & feel great wearing them. I bought the pink and now want the black ones too.
