Keep highly accurate time while sightseeing or on the trail with this sturdy carabiner clip watch. Clips onto a backpack or belt loop for quick and easy access. With rugged styling and a classic leather strap and backing, this analog watch syncs to signals from the U.S. atomic clock for maintenance-free use. Displays both 12-hour and 24-hour military time, day of the week, and digital date and seconds.

  • Included: batteries. We recommend having a jeweler change the batteries. The case is difficult to get into in order to best protect the mechanism inside.
  • Mineral glass face.
  • 1 3/4''W x 5 1/2''L; 2 oz.

We recommend having the watch battery replaced by a jeweler, as it is intentionally difficult to remove the back. This helps protect the watch mechanism. However, as global atomic functionality is relatively new, even experienced jewelers may have a difficult time re-setting the watch. Here are the steps to follow.

  • The hour and minute must be manually set:
  • Set the hour by pressing the bottom right button until the three-letter city code blinks. Press the button quickly two more times until you see "H" on the screen with a blinking number next to it. Press the top button to scroll through the hours, keeping in mind that this is displaying 24-hour clock time. Press the bottom right button again to set hour. You'll see a "wait" icon and the second hand will spin as the watch adjusts itself.
  • Set the minutes by pressing the bottom right button until the three-letter city code blinks. Press the button quickly three more times until you see "M" on the screen with a blinking number next to it. Press the top button to scroll through the minutes. Press the bottom right button again to set the minutes. You'll see a "wait" icon and the second hand will spin as the watch adjusts itself.

I was initially VERY happy when I received this watch as a gift. Setting it up to display the right time was a little difficult, but once it was up and running and showing the correct time it was very reliable for over a year. The problems I have with the watch, though, are as follows:

1) The (glass) face scratches VERY easily. I spend the greater portion of my time indoors so the watch doesn't go through a lot of turmoil. How it developed so many deep scratches on its face has me perplexed, but I wear it on the outside, hooked through a belt loop so the scratches couldn't come from keys or anything else that might be associated with carrying it in a pocket.

2) The instructions, while detailed, are very poorly written and inadequate. You shouldn't have to jump through so many hoops just to get this thing up and running.

3) Changing the battery yourself is all but impossible, unless you happen to have a stick of dynamite handy. Good luck getting the back of this thing off. Of course, once again the instructions are of no use. I'd tell you here whether you're supposed to pop it off, turn it clockwise, or turn it counter clockwise, but I've had no luck with ANY of these methods. I'm either going to have to travel 45 minutes into the nearest town and PAY a jeweler to replace my battery or, more likely, just throw the darn thing out. Totally frustrating, but again, at least it was a gift so I won't lose money on it (other than the cost of the replacement battery).

Because NatGeo's description doesn't say, I'll mention here that the watch is made by Dakota, in case that means anything to anyone considering purchasing it. The only recommendation I'd make would be to National Geographic to stop selling this UNLESS the issues addressed here are corrected. This watch, as sold currently, is NOT a quality product or a good buy.

Comments about National Geographic Atomic Clip Watch:

I have not used the watch and probably will return it. It would not tune in the nearest Radio Signal in New York, and I believe this battery is probably weak. The instructions for changing the battery and resetting the watch are written with poor english usage, and appear VERY COMPLICATED! In short, this product is much to "fussy" for my taste. I really would rather have a mechanical watch in the same format.
