Alpaca wool was originally reserved for Inca royalty because of its incredible softness and warmth. Today, a group of native artisans weaves this smooth, ample alpaca shawl using rustic hand looms and the same methods as their ancestors. The flowing, silky macramé fringe is knotted by hand in the tradition of the sophisticated wraps worn by indigenous Bolivian women.
100% alpaca wool with rayon fringe. Hand-loomed in Bolivia. 24"W x 70"L.
Dry clean.
Indigenous people in South America have raised alpaca for its fleece for thousands of years before Europeans learned about the animal and exported alpaca fiber to Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries. Today this domesticated animal is bred throughout the world, but its native habitat is the Andean altiplano: Ecuador, southern Peru, northern Bolivia, and northern Chile.
Descended from the wild vicuña, alpaca resemble a cross between a llama and a sheep. Its fleece is similar to sheep's wool, but is usually softer, less prickly, and has minimal lanolin content, making it virtually hypoallergenic. Its extreme warmth, relatively light weight, and natural resistance to water make alpaca wool an ideal fabric for the frigid winters of the Andean altiplano. These qualities have also led to a rise in the use of alpaca fiber in outdoor gear and active wear, although it is also easily spun into a fine enough yarn for use in suits and other dress wear.
Most alpaca products can be treated as you would an object made of sheep's wool#151;hand wash using a mild soap and lukewarm water, or dry cleanbut check the tag or manufacturer's instructions for specific instructions.

Comments about Bolivian Macramé Alpaca Shawl:
I purchased this item for myself. The photo doesn't do justice to the beauty and workmanship of the shaw. It's unlike any that I've seen in my social circles. Most want to touch it. The macrame and tassle ends are striking. The shaw conveniently stays where you put it, not constantly sliding. The weight of the finished ends hangs with purpose - well worth the price. I do wish it came in another color choice or two to wear in other seasons.

Comments about Bolivian Macramé Alpaca Shawl:
I'd been looking for a beautiful artisan red scarf/wrap for a long time. When saw this one in the NG catalog from Boliva I immediately purchased it. When I opened the box it took my breathe away, it was absolutely stunning in person! The red color is more of a burnt deep red- just lovely. The craftsmanship is exquisite with it's chevron weaving and silky complicated macraméd fringe. The texture of the alpaca wool is soft, warm and hearty for a life time of use. I've purchased many alpaca wool textiles from South America & have never been let down. This scarf/wrap is flawless & so versatile as a scarf, a wrap, a head wrap or a sash. It's also versatile enough to go from day wear to evening wear. A hearty staple in any womans wardrobe. Husbands, if you're reading this, this would make for an excellent gift for the special woman in your life- guaranteed!

Beautiful design but itchy material
Comments about Bolivian Macramé Alpaca Shawl:
The design and color of the wrap is very beautiful. But the wool is not very soft and itchy. When I tried to wrap the shawl around my neck, it was uncomfortably itchy.

Stunning Craftsmanship
Comments about Bolivian Macramé Alpaca Shawl:
I bought this shawl after reading the first review and was even more impressed with the sheer quality of this item than I had expected to be. This has to be one of the most useful(soft and warm) and beautiful scarves/shawls that I have had the pleasure to own--and that's coming from someone who owns over 20 scarves and shawls. It is simply incredible and even came in its own muslin storage bag.

More beautiful than expected
Pros
- simply gorgeous
Cons
Best Uses
Comments about Bolivian Macramé Alpaca Shawl:
This shawl is one of the most beautiful shawls I have even purchased.
The fine details in the craft of the shawl are not visible in the photo. The color is a deep red, with beautiful stitching, and soft flowing fringes and an increased level of style.
Nicely presented in its own package, this is a must.
