We received a lovely gift, a family favorite Mah Jong game set, described in the National Geographic Catalogue as containing carved tiles. They were not carved but covered with stickers. This game will not last.

We consider this false advertising, but was probably due to lack of quality control. Even if National Geographic was duped by a Chinese manufacturer we expect better from this company.

If I hadn't bought on sale, I would've returned it. I realize why it's a close out item. Unlike my first "Shut the box" game I purchased years back, which were wood, these are not, and are so small it's ridiculous. Your buyers should be more scrupulous of Chinese made items. I was excited to receive the game, which I wanted to learn. Now I am just nonplussed to think you are selling such junk.

Comments about Vintage-style American Mah-jongg Set:

I had no idea that the set would be so small. It was intended for one of an "older" group that gets together regularly at various locations. The small tiles were hard to handle and see. Unfortunately, there was no indication of size when the item was purchased or this product would not have been considered.
BUT there is nothing basically wrong with the set. It might be ideal for those wanting something compact for camping or travel. It is just not suitable for seniors.

Comments about Vintage-style American Mah-jongg Set:

My daughter bought this as a gift as I am the only one of my Mah Jongg friends without a set. She had never see a game in play. This set is not normal size. The tiles are miniature. The lack of tile racks doe not indicate that the racks missing are part of the game not for storage. Normal sets include BOTH storage racks and playing racks. Decals will not hold up to much handling as is part of the game. I am very disappointed is the quality received from National Geographic from which I would have expected higher.

Comments about Vintage-style American Mah-jongg Set:

Despite the fact that National Geographic no longer describes the tiles as "carved," they still describe the tiles as "richly detailed" (they are not) and the teeny tiny dice as "wood" (they are cheap plastic and about half the size of normal dice). The instructions are incomplete, so a beginner cannot play this without going online for more instruction. Moreover, the game is described as having 166 tiles with "14 of the most common...included as extras in case any are ever lost." It's worth knowing that five of the extra tiles are blank; more importantly, if you are new to Mah Jongg, there is no instructions about which the of tiles are "extra," so you will be unsure which to exclude. The inside liner of mine is poorly glued and buckled. Overall, this is poor value for a high-priced game. (Also, the gingfa tile--green dragon--is black (and also a dragon of sorts), which belies the "historically accurate" description.) In sum, this product is not as described.

The price is to high for this item. the wooden box is cheap, the tiles are to small. There is not one instruction on how to play or setup tiles. I wanted to give this as a Christmas gift but when I received it I wouldn't give this to anyone.

Before I purchased the item, I called your customer service rep and asked pertinent questions about the set. Not only were the answers incorrect when I received the item, but I had to fight for a postage-paid label to return the item. Very, very disappointing!
