After graduating with honors from Penn State University and spending two years as a newspaper photographer, award-winning photographer Steve McCurry went to India to work as a freelance photographer. His career launched after returning from Pakistan and Afghanistan with rolls of film sewn into his clothes. His were among the first pictures published showing the conflict in Afghanistan after the Soviet invasion.
McCurry has covered many wars around the world, and his images focus on the human aspect of war. "Most of my images are grounded in people, and I try to convey what it is like to be that person, a person caught in a broader landscape, that I guess you'll call the human condition."
