Essential, comprehensive, and easy to use, the revised edition of National Geographic Complete Birds of North America is an astonishing resource that covers every bird species found in North America as well as all the seasonal visitors. Entries are organized by family group, the taxonomic organization newly updated to match current American Ornithologists' Union guidelines. Within a family, each separate bird entry has dozens of tips and illustrations on species' gender, age group, behavior, habitat, nesting and feeding habits, and migration routes. Providing full information on more than 1,000 species, this book features hundreds of range and migration maps, cutting-edge information on identification, and more than 4,000 annotated illustrations by expert bird artists.
Jonathan Alderfer, a widely published author and field guide illustrator, is well known in the birding community for his expertise as a field ornithologist and his knowledge of North American birds. He has served as editor, author, and illustrator on a number of National Geographic birding books, including the 4th, 5th, and 6th editions of the bestselling Field Guide to the Birds of North America.
Comments about National Geographic Complete Birds of North America, 2nd Edition:
Excellent reference. This is based on the 6th edition of the Field Guide from 2011, most of the artwork is the same, most are slightly larger than the field guide. The organization is better since the separate section for accidentals is removed as are the separate maps for subspecies (something I find useless in the field). There is a lot more information for each species, information that might feel unnecessary in the small field guide.
I purchased this in the more expensive binding and that does make a real difference. This is a real book not a paperback that feel like it will fall apart if you open it up.
