Following Quick Start instructions, I installed the product from Disc #1.

A stale version of the software was installed that could not be updated even with help from CNG Support.

Loading the 6 image discs on my hard drive was predicted to take 60-90 minutes per disc -- it took 26-28 hours per disc on a Windows XP desktop computer that was doing little else.

Many of the product's features were not activated.

There were no instructions for installing the 2010-2011 image updates on Disc #7.

As a last resort, with a suggestion from CNG Support, I uninstalled the Disc #1 application and re-installed everything from Disc #7. Voila! The correct software version was there, all features were now active, and the 2010-2011 image update took less than 20 minutes.

I strongly recommend that you update your Quick Start instructions. Needless to say, I was close to returning as non-usable a product that is really quite impressive. However, with its many features, it's a challenge to figure out how everything works without even a rudimentary users manual.

Comments about The Complete National Geographic on 7 DVD-ROMs:

My wife complained about the shelves full of NG, so I switched to the digital edition and bought the complete 1888-2009 DVD set. It works brilliantly and I wish for updates for the more recent years in the same format, even though I already have access to the digital archives. I was surprised by the excessively long time it took to copy to hard drive, but at least that only had to be endured once and the result is brilliant.

Comments about The Complete National Geographic on 7 DVD-ROMs:

I was never able to get the program to work even after several weeks working with product support. On a high end Mac (12 cpus, 3 DVD devices) the program just hangs with the spinning beach ball for minutes before doing anything. Then it hangs again.

I was told that this is a problem with Adobe Air. I have seen reviews on other sites reporting this problem 2 plus years ago. I am disappointed that I was told to contact Adobe regarding a fix. I wish someone would take responsibility for the fact that the product does not work and fix it, rather than blame Adobe. Sounds as using Adobe Air as a platform was a mistake.

I have a high resolution 30" screen. However the product doesn't scale up, and the resolution is very poor.

I love the magazine and would love to use the product if it is ever fixed so it is useable.

Great Product, I recommend it whole heartedly. I can now get rid of some of my hard copies. There were some periods during product loading that thought it had locked up, but it finished without any other problems.

I was very excited to recieve this archive but after installing, it became clear that the text is only readable when extremely zoomed in, which makes navigation and peripheral vision dificult. I suggest only buying this product if you plan on using it with a 27" or larger display. Totally useless on my 21.5" imac. I would happily pay twice the price for better text resolution...

The set of DVDs was gift from my brother Abdul Subhan Daudpota.Good thing about it is that it is almost as good as the print edition. Better because of its portability.
But I am baffled by failure of the installation disk to install on Windows 8. So it is now useless for me. I wonder if the managers would do something about it and make it useful for windows 8/8.1 users.

Comments about The Complete National Geographic on 7 DVD-ROMs:

Nat Geo has been a part of my life for a long time. I have always wanted all of them, but space, and finances prohibited this. Having the entire collection on my laptop is about the next best thing. The only reason I did not give this five stars, the image quality is not exceptional, but I knew that before I bought it. I would have been willing to pay 5 to 10 times the price to get pre-press quality images. I am a librarian. The search engine is not quite as robust as one needs. I have access to another NAT GEO collection without the photographs. I will save search results from that collection to find what I am looking for.

Other reviews have been a bit harsh about the image quality and I think those expectations are unrealistic. Such a product would cost several hundred or thousands of dollars. If it were ever available, I would be one of the first to make the purchase.
