National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Robert Ballard, best known for his discovery of the R.M.S. Titanic, thought he knew everything about his ancestry, with a genealogy that traces back to the British Isles and Holland. While most of his DNA agrees with this story, he learned something unexpected from his Geno 2.0 results—his genome is about 2% Oceanian, connecting him to the first seafarers who settled the islands off the coast of southeast Asia around 50,000 years ago, probably via the Dutch side of his family.

About the test

National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Dr. Spencer Wells and team designed Geno 2.0 Next Generation based on the new technologies and insights that emerged since the launch of the Genographic Project ten years ago. Using a custom-built genotyping chip, we test nearly 750,000 DNA markers, many of which have been specifically selected to provide highly detailed ancestry-related information.

Geno 2.0 Next Generation is the official ancestry kit of The Great Human Race. This groundbreaking National Geographic Channel program follows survival expert Cat Bigney and archaeologist Bill Schindler as they attempt to live the way our ancestors did 2.6 million years ago. Join the Genographic Project and trace your own ancestral path with Geno 2.0 Next Generation as Cat and Bill trace the path of Homo sapiens through the East African savanna and beyond.

By participating, you will:

•  Discover the migration paths your ancient ancestors followed hundreds—even thousands—of years ago, with an unprecedented view of your ancestral journey.
•  Learn what percentage of your genome is affiliated with more than a dozen regions of the world—more than were possible with previous Geno kits.
•  Have the opportunity to share your story and connect with other Genographic Project participants, helping us fill in the gaps in the human story.

What's included in the Geno 2.0 Next Generation DNA Test kit:

The Geno 2.0 Next Generation kit contains everything you need to begin the journey into your past, including painless cheek swabs and instructions for submitting your DNA samples (return postage required). Plus, we’ve designed the Geno 2.0 Next Generation kit box to serve as a beautiful keepsake to store your results after you access them online.

Instructions:

Once you have completed the cheek swabbing process, you will secure the swabs inside the transport tubes, complete the informed consent form and mail the tubes and form off to the lab using the supplied envelope. It can take the lab several weeks to process and analyze your DNA. In the meantime, you can visit the Genographic web site to see where your sample is in the analysis process and learn about current processing times.

The Kit will include a “Consent to Genetic Testing” form that will have to be agreed to prior to sending in the sample for processing.

How your participation helps the Genographic Project:

The Genographic Project is an ambitious attempt to help answer fundamental questions about where humankind originated and how we came to populate the Earth. Using the latest genetic and computational technologies to analyze historical patterns in DNA from participants around the world, our team of world-renowned scientists led by Dr. Spencer Wells, seeks to reveal our migratory history and to better understand the connections and differences that make up humankind.

As a Genographic Project participant, you will have the opportunity to contribute your data to our Genographic database, helping our scientists and researchers who are working to chart a comprehensive map of the early stages of human history. Participation in the Genographic Project database is your choice and is not necessary to access your individual results.

And a portion of the proceeds from the sales of Geno 2.0 Next Generation kits are channeled back into the project to support additional research and to fund cultural conservation and revitalization efforts for indigenous communities around the world through the Genographic Legacy Fund.

Find more details on the Genographic Project on the About the Project page. Read Cara Santa Maria's interview with Spencer Wells here.

Due to the cost of the DNA analysis, once the kit has been opened, we cannot accept returns or administer refunds. You must have Internet access to view the results—results will not be mailed. Results are available online via confidential Genographic Project ID 10 weeks after our lab receives your DNA samples. If you lose the ID provided with the kit, we cannot recover your information. Each kit contains supplies for testing one person. Please note, because women do not carry a Y chromosome, this test will not reveal direct paternal deep ancestry for female participants. Women will learn other information about their paternal side of the family, however.

The Genographic Project does not test for medical information. Please read the complete terms and conditions of purchase. You must be 18 years or older to purchase a kit. Parental or guardian consent is required for participation of a child under 18.

For a limited time, Geno 2.0 Next Generation standard shipping is free within the United States, and international shipping fees are reduced by $9.95 per kit. Shipping and handling for delivery to Canada is $10 per order. Customers shipping to countries other than the United States and Canada will be charged $40 per order for S&H. Additional fees apply for expedited shipping.

I actually bought this to see just how far back the Native Americans were in my history, at least as told by my father. But the results only gave me the two most prevalent origins (one of which was unexpected), with no mention of Native American ancestry.

Yes, I know that ancient humans originated in Africa and migrated through Arabia, etc. That's the fluff I mentioned.

Note of caution: There is a liquid in the sample vials, and it spills. I don't know what it is, so I believe it's fortunate that it spilled on a newspaper instead of something I eat off or that has a finish on it.

And with a product that costs over $100, you would think that the postage for the samples would be prepaid, but it is not. And since it's not a simple first class envelope, there are extra charges that need to be accounted for.

I was quite disappointed with the results of my Genographic test, as I thought I would be getting much more information than what I actually received.

As for the positives, I was impressed with the detail in which my maternal and paternal haplogroup were calculated. Some of my siblings were tested with another company, and their haplogroup results were much more vague compared to mine. I also enjoyed reading about the migration patterns of my paternal and maternal ancestors; the presentation was very intriguing. Lastly, I found it interesting to compare my regional genetic composition to various reference populations.

However, the information only kept me intrigued for about an hour, and I was expecting to be able to do much more with my results. For example, the Frequently Asked Questions page claims that results can be transferred to FTDNA for genealogical purposes. However, I have had my test results for nearly a month, and the option to transfer my DNA is still not available. Also, the FAQ page suggests that users can download their raw DNA data, but if you look closely, it is only for users of previous kits. People who purchase the Next Generation kit cannot access or download their raw DNA at all.

So, in conclusion, I was somewhat fascinated by the results of my test, but I think the product is way overpriced for the information you get. I just hope that National Geographic makes our DNA information more available to us in the future, so that it can be more useful.

Comments about Geno 2.0 Next Generation Genographic Project Participation and DNA Ancestry Kit:

The product is easy to use and submit. But the results take a lot of time to become available (10 weeks) and I got no notice they were ready (I set a reminder fortunately).

The presentation of results is colorful and follows a nice sequence. There is lots of expansive detail and the navigation is comfortable.

My personal results confirmed some knowledge and rumors but also brought some surprises. I was disappointed that a known Native American component was not well focused, just very generic. I suspect a lack of data for the poor differentiation.

I was also surprised at the maternal "HEAT" map (maternal sourcing) which seemed locked into that Native American element but entirely ignored known and equal portions from other areas.

There is linkage to an external vendor but this is poorly explained and I haven't really explored this as a result.

The results were well enough received that my granddaughter has asked that she get to submit hers as a birthday present, knowing that this would effectively be her ONLY gift from me.

Amazing to learn which migration out of Africa into Europe my maternal line was from. Results match what I knew about my ancestry, plus added a couple twists. Got my really interested in learning more about European settlement. Have transferred my results to Family Tree DNA and plan to follow up with matches to extend my geological tree back in time.
