Introducing the next generation of our Genographic Project Participation Kit. This new DNA test uses cutting-edge technology to give you the richest ancestry information available. Join the more than half a million people who have already taken part in National Geographic's groundbreaking Genographic Project—contribute to this real-time scientific effort and learn more about yourself than you ever thought possible.

National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Dr. Spencer Wells and team designed Geno 2.0 based on the new technologies and insights that emerged since the launch of the Genographic Project in 2005. Using an exclusive, custom-built genotyping chip, we test nearly 150,000 DNA markers that have been specifically selected to provide unprecedented ancestry-related information.

By participating, you will:

•  Discover the migration paths your ancient ancestors followed hundreds—even thousands—of years ago, with an unprecedented view of your ancestral journey.
•  Learn what percentage of your genome is affiliated with specific regions of the world.
•  Find out if you have Neanderthal or Denisovan ancestry.
•  Have the opportunity to share your story and connect with other Genographic Project participants, helping us fill in the gaps in the human story.

What's included in the Geno 2.0 DNA Test kit:

The Geno 2.0 kit contains everything you need to begin the journey into your past, including painless cheek swabs and instructions for submitting your DNA samples (return postage required). Plus, we’ve designed the Geno 2.0 kit box to serve as a beautiful keepsake to store your results after you access them online.

How your participation helps the Genographic Project:

The Genographic Project is an ambitious attempt to help answer fundamental questions about where humankind originated and how we came to populate the Earth. Using the latest genetic and computational technologies to analyze historical patterns in DNA from participants around the world, our team of world-renowned scientists led by Dr. Spencer Wells, seeks to reveal our migratory history and to better understand the connections and differences that make up humankind.

As a Genographic Project participant, you will have the opportunity to contribute your data to our Genographic database, helping our scientists and researchers who are working to chart a comprehensive map of the early stages of human history. Participation in the Genographic Project database is your choice and is not necessary to access your individual results.

And a portion of the proceeds from the sales of Geno 2.0 kits are channeled back into the project to support additional research and to fund cultural conservation and revitalization efforts for indigenous communities around the world through the Genographic Legacy Fund.

Find more details on the Genographic Project on the About the Project page. Read Cara Santa Maria's interview with Spencer Wells here.

Due to the cost of the DNA analysis, once the kit has been opened, we cannot accept returns or administer refunds. You must have Internet access to view the results – results will not be mailed. Results are available online via confidential Genographic Project ID 6-8 weeks after our lab receives your DNA samples. If you lose the ID provided with the kit, we cannot recover your information. Each kit contains supplies for testing one person. Please note, Because women do not carry a Y chromosome, this test will not reveal direct paternal deep ancestry for female participants. Women will learn other information about their paternal side of the family, however.

The Genographic Project does not test for medical information. Please read the complete terms and conditions of purchase. You must be 18 years or older to purchase a kit. Parental or guardian consent is required for participation of a child under 18.

Once you have completed the cheek swabbing process, you will secure the swabs inside the transport tubes, complete the informed consent form and mail the tubes and form off to the lab using the supplied envelope. It can take the lab several weeks to process and analyze your DNA. In the meantime, you can visit the Genographic web site to see where your sample is in the analysis process and learn about current processing times.

You must read and accept the terms and conditions to participate in the Genographic Project. By selecting "I Accept" and clicking the "Add to Cart" button, you have indicated your acceptance of the terms and conditions to participate.

The Geno 2.0 Kits is available for shipment to most countries around the world. The Geno 2.0 Kit on this page can ship to U.S., Canada, and many international countries. Not available for shipment to Russia and Mexico.

For a limited time, Geno 2.0 standard shipping is free within the United States, and international shipping fees are reduced by $9.95 per kit. Shipping and handling for delivery to Canada is $10 per order. Customers shipping to countries other than the United States and Canada will be charged $40 per order for S&H. Additional fees apply for expedited shipping.

If you are purchasing a Geno 2.0 Kit for delivery to an European country or to Australia, visit the Geno 2.0 Kit Europe and Australia delivery product page to complete your purchase.

National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Robert Ballard, best known for his discovery of the R.M.S. Titanic, thought he knew everything about his ancestry, with a genealogy that traces back to the British Isles and Holland. While most of his DNA agrees with this story, he learned something unexpected from his Geno 2.0 results—his genome is about 2% Oceanian, connecting him to the first seafarers who settled the islands off the coast of southeast Asia around 50,000 years ago, probably via the Dutch side of his family.

Our new DNA test offers you the richest view of your genetic heritage available!

Receive an unprecedented view of the migration paths your ancient ancestors followed.

This special opportunity has brought such joy to our family. It is such a privilege to live in a time when we can find our most ancient ancestors' migration route out of Africa and see where they ended up, 5,500 years ago. It's a simple test, painless and easy to do. The wealth of information that comes back is fabulous. We share it over and over again with friends and relatives, who find it fascinating. It links beautifully with one's genealogy. In short, it's a thrill to be able to reach so far back in time.

The delivery of the package was within expectations. Length of time for test was also as expected. The results themseves were disappointingly ambiguous and generic. The results show that my ancestors were most likely Northern European (this catagory includes all of the U.K., every country in Europe north of Italy, plus Russia and the Baltic states) in addition to Mediteranian, and Asian! The only possibilities left were African American and Ociannic, which, last I checked I was pretty certain were not in my ancestry!! I paid $200 for this report that tells me what I already know. There are absolutely no dna details telling me anything about my personal family's origins. Oh, it also says my dna most closely matches with native Germans. There is no German ancestry on either side of my family, and I have researched my family's genealogy (father 13 generations, mother 5 generations)and there is no German from either male or female ancestors on either side. They do not offer a more detailed analysis of dna to show how this information was derived.I'm sure they are more scientific and clinical than this but I had the odd feeling that I got the same exact results that everyone else got.
I was not expecting medical dna info( that is provided by other sites), but I hoped to get some info on markers, descriptions of genetic features, etc.Had hoped to narrow down recent ( 6 generations) countries of origin rather than the northern hemisphere.

Comments about Geno 2.0 - Genographic Project Participation and DNA Ancestry Kit:

I received the kit as a gift, and I was really excited. After waiting about 9 weeks for the results, I was disappointed to find out that females cannot be given their paternal line information, while males receive both lines. If I had known this, I would have had my brother do it instead! The kit should be given to females at half price, since we only get half of our story.

Comments about Geno 2.0 - Genographic Project Participation and DNA Ancestry Kit:

I gave this to my mother as a Christmas gift. It was mailed in almost 11 weeks ago. Still no results. I have called and emailed and just get a canned response saying "there is a delay". They won't tell me the cause of the delay, and for a month they have been telling me one to two weeks for results. I hope the results are worth the amount I spent financially and the the time it is taking!

The kit charges for shipping and handling but does not even include prepaid postage to return the cheek swab for testing. The results of the testing is also generalized and appears to apply to almost anyone who completes the testing.

I bought kits for myself and for my adopted son. Neither one of us received results. The "system" stated there was a problem with the sample but offered nothing else to help explain what went wrong. Basically, I spent $200 to get no information whatsoever.

The detail is very good. there is a lengthy description about haplogroups and pre-homosapians . I actually paid for another dna test first, and then compared the report to the national geographic report, and then ordered the national geographic.
