At its height, the Roman Empire encompassed areas as diverse as Greece, Germany, and Morocco, whose ancient cultural traditions have left their mark even on modern-day Italy. At a family-run foundry in Rome, artisans look to these pre-Empire cultures for inspiration but apply their own style, as in this patinated brass horse adapted from a seventh-century B.C. sculpture in an Athens museum.
