Although the tools we use to measure meteorological data have become more sophisticated, it is still possible to predict the arrival of storms using something as simple as a curved glass container half filled with water. Often called a Goethe glass for the German writer who popularized the device in the 18th century, these storm glasses measure barometric pressure through water level.

When the water level in the narrow spout is higher than in the main body of the glass, it indicates lower air pressure and possibly the arrival of a storm. If the water level in the spout is lower, air pressure is rising, which may indicate the passing of a storm and the continuation of fair weather. Hand-blown glass and hand-finished wooden stand.
