Carried by Irish gentlemen for centuries, the shillelagh walking stick was often a symbol of a young man's transition into adulthood. Since the mid-19th century, it has come to represent Irish craftsmanship and hospitality.
The artisan who carves these blackthorn-wood walking sticks in his County Cork home collects the branches on his daily walks through West Cork forests.
- Approximately 36''-38" L. 3/4 " in diameter
- Finished with a rubber tip for traction.
The Irish walking stickknown as a "shillelagh"is named for the Shillelagh Forest in County Wicklow on the east coast of Ireland, once known for its massive oak stands.
The shillelagh's knob was often made from a heavy twisted blackthorn rootfor weight, and to pack a wallop in self-defense.
A badge of honor for the man who carries one, a shillelagh was traditionally a sign of a young man's passage into adulthood.
The craftsman who makes our blackthorn and hazelwood walking stick has made the ones presented to U.S. Presidents Kennedy, Reagan, Clinton and Obama as Ireland's official gift on state visits.

Comments about Handmade Irish Walking Stick:
Most places offer walking sticks that are as short as 34"-36". This one started at 36" and arrived measuring 37". It is perfect, I use it everyday and am proud of this excellent purchase. I would recommend this product to anyone needing a good, supporting, walking stick with a bit of old fashioned style.

Comments about Handmade Irish Walking Stick:
Delighted with my walking stick my daughter Rosie bought me for Christmas. Much nicer than the one I bought last year, the craftsman has decided to leave the outer bark on, which gives a lovley texture and is more natural looking. Why the bark was ever removed I don't know. Great craftsman ship!

Comments about Handmade Irish Walking Stick:
I need a cane daily to get about. A blackthorn is known by anyone in the industry to be the most solid. I have over 20 canes to get about with , but my daily safe cane is this same as the blackthorn offered. I have had canes break on me, I know my blackthorn will not. I feel secure. I travel internationally and know also it is a good weapon if need be..haha.
Other cane businesses will agree, the blackthorn is the sturdiest offered.
I just wish I could get a clean L shaped handle with a smooth staff.
so instead of reordering now my third, I am going to National Geo gift shop and picking out my own.
If you just want some style thing.go elsewhere. this is the real pedigree dog of sticks
This is the best cane if you need one. Nothing is fake or false about a 'blackthorn'..solid staff: MY Favorite Daily Walking Cane!.

Comments about Handmade Irish Walking Stick:
Would have preferred the entire walking stick in natural wood, but then again perhaps this is somewhat the tradition for Irish walking sticks. The fit, feel and function every bit meets my expectations. I would like to know where to get more rubber tips when it needs to be replaced.

Comments about Handmade Irish Walking Stick:
I am not sure if the dripping paint is supposed to be part of its charm but I wasn't impressed. The globs of paint along the side were soft and easily peel off taking excess paint with them. For the price and the claim of being hand crafted I expected more.

Comments about Handmade Irish Walking Stick:
I have a few sticks and each has it's own character. When I first unwrapped this walking stick, from the exceptionally well done wrapping, I was a little disappointed. There was a couple of paint runs in the black paint; nothing to worry about if your not cynical like me.
The handle on mine was somewhat shorter than the one displayed. Smaller than what I would prefer for my larger hands. However the length was near spot on.
Then the test of any great walking stick; I took it for a stroll. I am rather proud of my new stick as it has a great feel to it. It is weighty yet not heavy.
It has only been one day and just a return walk from the local postal outlet in an urban setting. Comparing this stick to some others it will hold up well.
Then again, is not the true character of any walking stick in the compliments it receives and the stories that it can tell. I can not wait for the adventure.
Overall it is a quality product at a respectable and fair price.national geographic
