Croagh Patrick, where Ireland's patron saint spent 40 days fasting, is the country's most famous pilgrimage site. On "Reek Sunday," the final Sunday in July, tens of thousands of pilgrims climb its 2,500-foot peak. Nestled at Croagh Patrick's feet is the picturesque town of Westport, with majestic mountains on one side and the wild Atlantic on the other. It is here that our worsted wool pullover is made. Its thick-knit collar is inviting on cold days, and the three-quarter buttoned neck allows for easy layering. The Celtic knot design is inspired by the 8th-century Book of Kells.

Our handsome herringbone-patterned wool scarf is designed and woven by a husband-and-wife team in their County Clare workshop, using an antique Hattersley Domestic loom from the early 1900s. These narrow machines, made in Yorkshire, England, of cast-iron, leather, and wood, are especially suited to weaving scarves because they create two naturally reinforced selvedge edges, rather than the cut and sewn edges found on industrially woven scarves.

For hundreds of years, women in the rural villages of the Aran Islands off the western coast of Ireland have knit natural wool sweaters for their fisherman kin. At weekly gatherings, they examined each other's work and continually invented intricate new stitches. Each of the stitches in this generously sized, traditional Aran sweater represents a facet of fishing culture: the honeycomb stitch for hard work, the cable stitch for safety on the waters, and the basket weave as a wish for a plentiful catch. 100% merino wool. Made in Ireland.

This yoked cardigan is knit in Peterhead, Scotland, on the northeast coast of the mainland, using 100% merino wool from Ireland.

In just a century since they first appeared, the textured wool sweaters of the Aran Islands have become “as tenacious an international symbol of Ireland as the harp and shamrock,” writes fashion historian Deirdre McQuillan. It wasn’t until the home crafts movement at the end of the 19th century that Aran’s distinctive patterns became known around the world. Today, from tourist shops to fashion shows, one can find sweaters based on stitches that were invented by grandmothers and great-grandmothers only a few generations ago.

Cable knit for safety in the waters. Diamonds for fishing nets. Honeycomb pattern for industriousness. Women on Ireland’s craggy Aran Islands have always knit sweaters for their fishermen kin, but in the early 20th century these enterprising crafters began selling them to travelers, and the vast vocabulary of stitches took on symbolic meanings. Our Aran-style pullover is made in Ireland of 100% merino wool and features an inviting shawl collar.
