Under the Balinese sun, artisans decorate lengths of fabric using a traditional batik technique developed in the coastal town of Lasem on the neighboring island of Java. Lasem is known for centuries of cross-cultural exchange and immigration with China, and bright red colors are typical of Lasem batik, as seen in this reversible jacket. Lightly quilted and fully finished with pockets and frog closures on both sides. Reverses to a rich aubergine (see online). Golden batik-dyed floral patterns grace both sides. Please accept slight variations due to the nature of the dyeing process.

Textile artisans in Bali’s capital of Denpasar create this lively, textured-look design by first hand-painting and then hand-dyeing black cotton fabric. After each color of dye is applied, the long-sleeved is dried in the Indonesian sun. Afterward, beaded accents are added by hand.

The wax-resist dyeing technique of batik has a long history in Indonesia, where it evolved into high art over the past few centuries. Using a special tool that allows melted wax to flow as if through a fountain pen, artisans trace elaborate floral designs, curlicues, and dotted patterns onto fabric. When dyed, the wax-drawn designs remain vibrant. Similar patterns are hand-drawn here using metallic paints on aqua-blue 100% cotton, with hand-beaded details. 3/4-length sleeves.
