For thousands of years, Peruvian weavers have produced elaborate garments piece by piece on narrow looms. Rather than hiding the seams, the weavers often enhanced the garments with decorative stitches. Once a necessity, these stitches now become distinctive accents that give this red baby alpaca-blend cardigan a hand-embellished touch.

Wear it like a traditional poncho, or adjust the V opening to your back, and the poncho softly drapes off the shoulders just like a shawl.

Archaeologists call the period between 1475 and 1532 Peru’s Late Horizon. Most smaller civilizations had become part of the Inca Empire, which dominated the region in the pre-Columbian era. Architecture, ceramics, and textile arts flourished. The gold and red geometric pattern of this soft baby alpaca and silk scarf is inspired by a woven sling from the Late Horizon period.

The Paracas culture flourished in present-day Peru from the seventh to the first century B.C. When archaeologists discovered the Great Paracas Necropolis on the Pacific coast in the 1920s, it included a remarkably preserved woven textile, colored with natural dyes, featuring winged supernatural figures. The geometric garments worn by those shamanic figures are the inspiration for our ultrasoft baby alpaca and silk scarf, which uses similar earth-toned colors.

While visitors to Peru often spend time in Lima and Arequipa, fewer make the trip to the country’s sweeping Pacific beaches. This baby alpaca cardigan is inspired by city and sea alike: The pattern on the cuffs and hem is adapated from baroque cathedral decorations in Arequipa, while a red ruffle peeks out like a wave lapping at the shore. A single button secures this flyaway-style cardigan.

Terrace farming has been part of the Peruvian landscape since at least 900 b.c. It makes even the steep Andes farmable, which, scholars agree, contributed to the success of pre-Inca civilizations like the Chavín, Moche, and Huari. This ancient striped landscape of rock, soil, and crops is the inspiration behind our textured sweater.

Chakana Alpaca Sweater
Chakana Alpaca Sweater

Category: Clothing/Men's Clothing/Sweaters

The Spanish vanquished the last Inca strongholds in the 16th century, but from the soaring heights of Machu Picchu, it is easy to imagine that the Inca empire still extends as far as the eye can see. The Inca understood their world as three interconnected parts: hanaq pacha, the world above, ukhu pacha, the realm below, and kay pacha, the world of the here and now. This complex cosmology found simple expression in the image of the chakana—the Inca cross—a graceful symbol that represented the entire Inca universe. Inspired by graceful lines of Machu Picchu and the chakana, this beautiful pastel sweater is knit on communal looms using 100% pure superfine alpaca yarn from the Peruvian city of Arequipa.

The native doves of Peru appear much like their northern cousins, but when they take flight, their brilliant wing patches appear as shining crescents of bright white feathers. The doves’ call—coo-coo-lee—has earned this Peruvian bird the nickname cuculi. Inspired by this familiar but beautiful local bird, the long and lovely Peruvian Dove cardigan sweater wraps you in gossamer warmth. With a delicate and subtly asymmetrical grey and white pattern, the open collar can be pulled in close for a shawl-like effect, or worn open and loose for a dramatic and flattering drape. This superlight alpaca sweater is hand-finished in the Peruvian Andes by a company dedicated to supporting local Andean communities and craftsman.

Trujillo, Peru, is known as the cradle of Peruvian independence, but colonial architecture is a hallmark of the city. Hidden hook-and-eye clasps.
