Women in the Potosí region of southern Bolivia typically wear shawls called iliqlla, and according to tradition the pattern identifies the wearer's community. The zig-zagging design of this alpaca cardigan is inspired by these woven shawls, as well as the colors of Andean sky over Cerro de Potosí, a mountain that has yielded rich mines of silver ore since the Spanish conquest.

In Charazani, on Bolivia’s western border, there are only two seasons - wet and dry. During the wet season the people harvest flowers and plants that they dry to be used in rain ceremonies through the arid season. The drying process changes the flowers’ colors, with some remaining bright and some fading. These floral hues, along with historic Charazani textiles, inspire the design of this hooded vest. Zip front. Aymara artisans working in La Paz, Bolivia, hand-loom this unique piece using 100% alpaca fiber.

The Guaraní people are an indigenous cultural group who live in Paraguay and parts of Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Bolivia. Before European contact, the seminomadic culture didn’t have a written language. The pattern on this lightweight alpaca cardigan is taken from a pictogram for water found on textiles in the Guaraní Museum of Bolivia. The 3/4-sleeve design features a hand-crocheted border and resin buttons.

A highlight of Carnaval in Oruro, Bolivia, is the Diablada, an elaborate choreographed dance that dates back to pre-Columbian times. Masked revelers act out a story of good versus evil. Their costumes often include belts decorated with silver coins, a meaningful symbol in this 500-year-old mining city. These overlapping coins are what inspired the pattern on our soft 100% pima cotton cardigan. Button front.
