Arabesque designs—repeating geometric patterns of flowers and animals—are often found in Middle Eastern art and architecture. In Islamic art, these never-ending patterns symbolize a spirituality that extends beyond the visible world. These 24-karat gold-vermeil earrings pair intricate arabesque design with a timeless style. Gold vermeil is a technique first used in 18th-century France for gold-plating sterling silver.

Handmade in Cairo. 2" long.

These earrings are so beautiful and I've worn them so often since I bought them (a year ago, I think?) that I just purchased another pair in case I lose my current pair or they stop making them or something. These are my favorite earrings that I currently own, minus family heirlooms. They are very well made and haven't tarnished at all nor have I had any trouble with the clasp. The only scenario where I wouldn't wear them would be certain traveling situations, because it's pretty clear that they are real gold, and even though they're small and tasteful, that's just not very nice to flaunt them in some situations. Aside from that, I would wear these to any occasion, including just around the house -- because I enjoy them that much.

The earrings are stated as "24-karat gold-vermeil". However, gold never tarnishes! I bought two pairs; one for myself and one for my daughter. I noticed that within two weeks mine began to tarnish. My daughter came to visit, and stated that she had worn hers very seldom, but had also noticed that they were tarnishing. Shame on NGS for claiming that the earrings are gold, when indeed they are not!

Comments about Egyptian Arabesque Gold Earrings:

The earrings are beautiful & I love them! I have owned them for more than a year, and they have yet to fade or tarnish. They are a heavier earring, but to me, that means they are better made. I would rather the weight than for them to feel cheap.

In the script of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, an oval with a horizontal line at one end was called a cartouche and symbolized the presence of a royal name. During the centuries of Pharaonic rule, the cartouche came to be used as an amulet, worn by Egyptian royalty to guard against evil spirits in life and in death. Modeled after those ancient amulets, these modern cartouches feature one of three hieroglyphic words at their center. Pictured left to right: peace, love, or forever. Available in 18-karat gold-plate or sterling silver.

The Irish claddagh is a symbol that dates back 500 years to County Galway. The pair of clasped hands holding a crowned heart stands for love, friendship, and loyalty. The trinity knot, also called a triquetra, is an unending three-cornered shape, used throughout Celtic art as far back as the 8th century Book of Kells. Artists and craftsmen have used it to represent three-fold concepts for centuries: past, present, and future; daughter, mother, grandmother; and the Christian Holy Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Today many people embrace the trinity knot as a symbol of Irish or Scottish heritage or spiritual beliefs.

The ancient Etruscans, a civilization that flourished in northern Italy until the first century BC, were known for their sophisticated metalwork. Granulation, where cast-metal pieces were painstakingly decorated with tiny spheres, was a specialty, and the best pieces were saved to accompany the wearer into the afterlife. These 18-karat-gold-vermeil earrings are reproductions of an ancient Etruscan design. Handcrafted in Cortona, in the heart of Tuscany, Italy.

Venetian explorer and trader Marco Polo was one of the first Westerners to travel the Silk Road, bringing European goods to Asia and returning with, among other things, precious gems. Here, the journey is embodied in garnet, peridot, amethyst, and granulated 24-k gold vermeil. Renaissance designer Benvenuto Cellini's work for the Medici family is adapted by Chinese jewelers using faceted gems mined in India—true fusion of three cultures. “Viking’s compass” and “water sapphire” are two nicknames for the violet gem iolite. Viking navigators used thin slices of the polarized stone as a lens through which to view the sun and set their course. Today it’s a common gift for 21st wedding anniversaries. It’s found throughout the world, but especially in India, where these hoop iolite earrings are handcrafted and faceted by Jaipur jewelers. 18-karat gold vermeil.

As the sun rises over the Amber Fort, just north of Jaipur, the red sandstone walls take on an orange glow, much like the radiant, faceted onyx at the center of these gold vermeil earrings. The openwork design is inspired by the lattice screens above the palace’s Ganesh Gate, which served as the entrance to the maharaja’s private quarters. From here, women of the royal family could watch the proceedings in the public hall.
