      Lovely necklace

      By Mimi

      from Cupertino, CA

Comments about Alexander the Great Coin Necklace:

The necklace is pretty, and will be a versatile piece. The coin in the back view is more recessed than it appeared to me in the picture, and there are three raised bumps (like tiny clips) on the back mount. The width of the pendant is almost 3/4". The front is true to the picture.

I bought three of these necklaces to give to my two nieces and sister - since their last name is Alexander. I thought it was kind of neat to give this to them. Now all three of them have the same name necklace. They said they loved them.

Comments about Alexander the Great Coin Necklace:

The pendant was beautifully made. The silvery coin set into the unique gold setting makes the relatively small pendant really stand out when worn. It's great that both sides of the coin can be seen equally well. My only peeve is the chain - it is extremely light in weight, and I fear is not very strong. It also looks cheap compared to the pendant.

Comments about Alexander the Great Coin Necklace:

This necklace is absolutely beautiful. The artist that designed the pendent chose to trim the coin in gold which accented the coin perfectly. It will be a collector piece in my jewelry collection. The pendent can be worn with casual clothing or dress up affairs. Thank you National Geographic for carrying this beautiful work of art, it is a treasure!

Roman emperors commissioned thousands of different designs and denominations of coins and people from Britain to Spain to Syria still turn up Roman coins while plowing their fields and digging in their gardens. For collectors, there's nothing more satisfying than pinpointing when an ancient bronze coin was first minted. The reproduction coins in our multistrand necklace depict an emperor on horseback under the words OPTIMO PRINCIPI, Latin for "highest prince." Several emperors used this title, but it's most often found on coins minted by the first-century emperor Trajan.

Since ancient times, the owl and the olive branch have been featured on the Athenian currency to spread the values of the city’s patroness, Athena: victory, peace, and wisdom. The owl, with its ability to see in the darkness, represents wisdom; and the olive branch is a symbol of the goddess’s peaceful victory over Poseidon for the city of Athens. These sacred symbols propagated Athenian values of victory, peace, and wisdom throughout the ancient world, and are still featured on the Greek €1 coin.

Since the first half of the 20th century, the mythical, celestial snow lion has been the national protector of Tibet, blazing with fearlessness and representing dominance over the Himalayan mountains. Before Tibet was incorporated into the People's Republic of China, the snow lion was found on the country's coins, stamps, and the national flag, and it is still a symbol of the Tibetan independence movement.

Jasper, a form of chalcedony, has been used since ancient times for everything from arrow tips to official carved seals to snuff bottles that were highly collectible in 19th- and early-20th-century China. This triple strand of green, reddish, and brown jasper beads is interrupted throughout by pearls, and is inspired by the beaded necklaces that were popular in the Mandarin court of the late 17th century.

The image of a handwritten letter, folded and sealed with wax, perhaps handed to a valet or maid for delivery, is a common theme in depictions of the 19th century. Many people had seals engraved with their initials or family crest. This sterling silver necklace is cast from the impression of an antique seal that may have belonged to someone associated with seafaring. The design features an escalop, an emblem of safe travel. Leaping dolphins, regarded as guides, signify protection across the vast sea. And seagulls represent the welcoming sound of the shore after a long voyage.

During the 1st century AD, glass production in the Roman world drastically changed as the art of glass blowing was discovered and vessels for everyday use began to be made in aqua hues. Remains of many 2,000-year-old drinking glasses, vases, and jugs continue to be uncovered across the former Roman Empire, especially in Israel. Each glass medallion in this remarkable necklace was once part of an object that was created more than two millennia ago. It may have been part of a water vessel carried by a servant, or a bottle that held perfume or medicine.
