The Uros are an indigenous South American people whose civilization predates the Inca conquest. Today they continue to live on human-made totora-reed islands on Lake Titicaca and in small communities along the Rio Lauca in Bolivia. This soft alpaca scarf, in a range of muted earth tones, is inspired by millennia-old Uros textiles called mantas, which are simple striped, woven blankets.

Hand-loomed in Bolivia. 100% alpaca. 8 1/2"W x 70"L.

Dry clean.

            Comments about Uros Islands Scarf:

The scarf was much darker in color than the online picture. It was also much thinner that I expected. I would recommend this scarf only if the buyer knows of the above drawbacks. The scarf was nicely soft and should not cause irritation where it touches the skin.

In this compelling travel memoir, two-time PEN/Faulkner Award winner John Edgar Wideman explores Martinique's seductive natural beauty and culture, as well as its vexed history of colonial violence and racism. Attempting to decipher the strange, alluring mixture of African and European that is Creole, he and his French traveling companion develop a powerful attraction to one another which they find at once threatened and elevated by a third party—the island itself. A rich intersection of place, history, and the intricacies of human relations, Wideman's story gets deep into the Caribbean and close to the heart of the Creole experience.

Maya weavers turn a new page on tradition by using sustainable bamboo fiber on their back-strap looms rather than the usual wool to create this extra-long, extra-soft scarf. The watercolor effect is created using a tie-dye weaving process called ikat. 100% organic bamboo. Hand-wash or dry clean. Hand-loomed by a women’s craft collective in Solola, Guatemala.

Hammerheads school in enormous numbers. Coral reefs ripple with color by day but at night turn into killing grounds for packs of whitetip sharks. Pristine waters brim with tuna and dolphins in hot pursuit of clouds of fish. Isla del Coco, or Cocos Island, appears as a tiny dot on a map in the Pacific Ocean more than 300 miles off the coast of Costa Rica, and is home to one of the greatest concentrations of predators on the planet. Dive into this carnivorous crowd in Shark Island with marine ecologist Enric Sala and an international team of explorers and scientists. The team traverses hundreds of square miles of ocean in search of clues to explain why so many predators congregate here and why, just outside Cocos' protected waters, life largely disappears.
