The trinity knot, also called a triquetra, is an unending three-cornered shape, used throughout Celtic art as far back as the 8th century Book of Kells. Artists and craftsmen have used it to represent three-fold concepts for centuries: past, present, and future; daughter, mother, grandmother; and the Christian Holy Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Today many people embrace the trinity knot as a symbol of Irish or Scottish heritage or spiritual beliefs.

Fewer people have the time to care for fine flatware, and many ornate sets handed down through the generations end up gathering dust. When the California designer who created this watch inherited her great-grandmother’s 19th-century collection, she was inspired to turn it into jewelry. Our toggle-clasp, silver-plated watch is made using a reproduction of a Victorian-era pattern, evoking memories of long-ago celebrations.

Today we have two-way radio, satellite phones, and sophisticated GPS equipment, but in the 18th century, ships at sea communicated with each other via signal flags. Even with all our modern gear, sometimes low-tech is the way to go, and the flags are still used in conjunction with these newer communication technologies. Each flag stands for a letter and can be used to spell out words, but each flag also stands for a full message. For example the “C” flag can also mean “affirmative,” and the “U” flag can be a signal to an approaching ship that it is running into danger. The flags have still more meanings when used in yacht racing.

Flat carved disks called bi have been found in China dating back to the Neolithic period. They’re believed to symbolize a connection with the heavens, and they symbolized high rank. More recently, the design on the reverse of the medals given at the 2008 Beijing Olympics was based on bi disks. Here bi disks of smooth black onyx are paired with faceted carnelian and linked with silver-plated wires.

Silversmithing has a long and respected history on the Indonesian island of Bali, where the word pandai means both "smith" and "clever." Indonesia's early royal families were generous patrons of the arts, and many contemporary silversmiths have inherited hundreds of years of their ancestors' skills. A small group of Balinese artisans collaborate on the tiny granulated designs on these medallion earrings. Each is handcrafted from sterling silver and paired with a smooth onxy cabochon.

Found throughout Greek art and architecture, the "meander" motif, also called the Greek key, is one of the most important symbols in ancient Greece. The unending pattern first appeared in the Geometric period (900-700 B.C.) and historians believe that it symbolized eternity and unity. Others have interpreted that it symbolizes the antagonistic and forever entwined relationship between mortals and the gods. The pattern has continued through the centuries, and can still be seen in neoclassical architecture around the world.
