This chic openwork clutch is a wink at Yogyakarta’s dual spirit—an ancient city with a thriving international college population—with subtle gold lamé peeking out through the die-cut design in buttery-soft, turquoise leather. It’s handcrafted by Tuniyaton, a local artisan who credits her leatherwork business with helping her own independent spirit emerge. The seasonless style is just as suited to summer weddings as it is to winter holiday fetes, and the truly functional wallet organizer and generous zip pocket make it as practical as it is pretty. Color may vary slightly from that pictured.

Handcrafted in Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia. Cowhide with suede lining. Approximately 5"H x 10 1/4"W x 1"D.

Although her widowed mother could afford to send her to only elementary school, Tuniyaton has become a savvy, self-taught entrepreneur, first working as a shop keeper and at a vegetable market, and later opening her own leather goods business. Despite personal setbacks, she has grown her business, instilling in her own children the drive that has helped her gain a sense of independence. "My focus is on my children and the people that work with me,” Tuniyaton says, “as well as designing and crafting leather goods. Both of my children are involved in this venture, and I love seeing them happy and continuing what I worked so hard to get started."

The colorful printed cotton we associate with traditional West African dress goes by several names, which hints at its complexity: Ankara, Dutch wax print, and Java print. Originally produced in Holland for sale in Indonesian colonies, the fabric found a bigger audience in West Africa, where many now consider it a symbol of cultural pride. The name Ankara orginated when the Turks began producing their own version in imitation of the Dutch—Ankara (formerly known as Angora) is the Turkish capital. A patchwork of sky blue and vibrant orange decorates one side of this bag, crafted in a small studio in Nigeria. Stiffened cotton with bamboo accents and magnetic closure.

Jewelers on the island of Java work in open-air studios creating the sterling silver beads that have been a local art form since the 16th century. This bracelet begins with a technique called repoussé, where designs are hammered into a sheet of metal. The textured metal is then curled into a long cylindrical bead, and a mold is made. Sterling silver beads cast from this original mold are then slid onto a braided leather cord to make a handsome bracelet that flatters both men and women. Made in Indonesia.

There’s more than meets the eye in these delicate chandelier-style pearl earrings, which combine Greek, Buddhist, and Javanese influences. The “shoulder” from which the charms hang is adapted from Greek jewelry of the Hellenic era, about the 3rd to 1st century B.C. The intricate sterling silver patterns are inspired by images of the Buddha’s curled hair found at Bali’s famous Borobudur temple. The gentle sway of the three drops is reminiscent of the way characters move in Java’s ancient wayang kulit shadow puppet theater. A trio of cultured pearls, in pink, black, or white, are the finishing touch.
