Seema was born and raised in Kashmir where her love of designing began at a young age. “Ever since I can remember, I used to paint a lot—from my mom's sari to our curtains and even our bedspreads,” she says. “I think I saw my calling and, after graduation, I took a five-year degree course in textile designing.” She worked as a designer for several years, and after starting a family, decided to leave the full-time working world and go into business for herself. Her own line of apparel and home furnishings has an emphasis on embroidery and bright colors.

Gurgaon is one of India’s fastest growing cities, but family-run craft studios still flourish amid the international businesses that are fueling the economic boom. Our colorful, lightweight jacket is made in one of these studios. Tie-dyed by hand, each jacket is unique, with hand-embroidered paisley patterns on the front and one large paisley motif on the back. Paisley patterns, based on a stylized mango leaf, have been popular ever since merchant sea captains began bringing Indian textiles back to Europe and the U.S. in the 1700s. During the 19th century, paisley shawls from India were all the rage in Europe and America. This sheer butterfly-sleeve tunic is made in the same spirit of transformation, and updates a timeless paisley pattern in a contemporary style. Poly georgette with elastic ruching at the waist. Shalimar Garden Paisley Jacket
Shalimar Garden Paisley Jacket
(Based on 5 reviews)
Category: Clothing/Women's Clothing/Jackets and Vests

The swirling pattern of paisley—in Farsi called boteh, the word for a young flower or palm leaf—evolved from a traditional Kashmiri design. The Silk Road brought Kashmiri shawls to Europe where they became wildly popular. The Scottish mill that was first able to re-create the intricate design was in Paisley, Scotland, and gave the pattern its English name. This lightweight, 100% cotton, open-front jacket is made in India with an allover paisley pattern and hand-beaded accents. The greens, blues, reds, and pinks evoke the flowers in Kashmir's Shalimar Garden, built by 17th-century Mughal emperor Jahangir and famous for its nightly fountain displays.

The lacy teardrop shape known as paisley originated in Persia and came to be closely associated with the work of Indian Kashmiri weavers. As trade between Asia and Europe expanded in the 18th century, demand for the pattern was so great that weavers in the town of Paisley, Scotland, created their own version of the design, giving the pattern its Western name. Incorporating these curved and leaflike paisley shapes, our jacket is handcrafted of 100% silk. Artisans working in India embellish each jacket by hand with embroidery and beadwork, guaranteeing that no two will be exactly alike. Fully lined.

The Mughal Empire dominated the Indian subcontinent in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The shahs spared no luxury, even when the court was on the move during a military campaign or hunting expedition. Printed cottons such as these would have made tent “walls” in the northern Indian desert. The print of our reversible throw pillow, inspired by the intricate metalwork settings of Mughal jewelry, requires as many as 12 separate blocks to achieve the layers of color and pattern.
