Comments about Windows of the Soul:

This book grabbed me! I read it in several days while I was laid up sick at home & it moved me. The pictures tell a story but the narrative took me right there. I feel like I know exactly what the writer went through. Great job of not swaying her opinion or leading the reader anywhere. It is not meant as a pro or con to these cultures. I saw all aspects of this section of a world I may never see. I feel like I know them a lot better, & as members of the human race... I identify.

Thank you for the opportunity to learn more about LIFE!

Ocean Soul is a love story. It is a story of discovery. It is a story of hope. The story begins when a boy who loves the sea attends an event with underwater photographers and has an epiphany: “I had always wanted to explore the oceans, but I now understood how I would do this. I would do it with a camera.” With sheer determination, hard work, and a little bit of luck the boy, named Brian Skerry, realized his dream with more than 20 awe-inspiring articles for National Geographic magazine. Now, with Ocean Soul, he showcases his stunning photography and describes his adventurous life in a gripping portrait of the ocean as a place of beauty and mystery, a place in trouble, and ultimately, a place of hope that will rebound with the proper attention and care.

We meet Sam, the "AIDS" lion infected by mistake at a vet clinic; Boerjke, a baboon with epilepsy and Down syndrome; and Savanna, the one-eyed lioness. And we meet Marieta van der Merwe herself, the inspiring proprietor of Harnas who shares her home with needy wild animals. Survivor of an early life fraught with personal tragedy in the African Bush, she now devotes herself as care-giver and ambassador for wildlife and wildland. Told with insight, humor, and thrilling immediacy by author and Harnas volunteer Barbara Bennett, this story will captivate readers of all ages.

Stained glass, vitrales in Spanish, is an important part of barocco mestizo style, the blend of Spanish and indigenous architecture found throughout Bolivia. Congregations that couldn’t afford true stained glass would mimic it with paint. The hand-shaped leaded outlines of these intricate windows are the inspiration for the pattern on our gray-green 100% alpaca crewneck sweater.
